Question about 1992 Lexus Es 300
I recently bought a '92 Lexus Es 300 from my mother. It ran great for about a week then it started "stuttering" for lack of a better word while running. I noticed later in the day that white some was coming from the exhaust and a strong gas smell when I got out of the car. I plan to have this looked at in the next couple weeks, but my knowledge of cars is limited. I would like some suggestions so I don't get rolled over by the mechanic. Thanks.
It's the ECU. Very common with the early '90s lexus cars. Everyone will say head gasket, but unless your oil is milky white, it's not coolant leaking into the cylinder.
Buy an ECu on ebay for less than $100, it plugs in under the dash, just like a computer printer. Easy fix.

ITS THE ECU. misfiring and white smoke from the exhuast THAT SMELLS LIKE GAS is an ECU problem. let it run, and the "white smoke" will condense in the muffler, get a little on a stick and try to light it. it will. its gas. replace ur ecu. (i have had this problem already on same car)

Anytime you have white smoke billowing out of the exhaust pipe, you have coolant entering the cylinders. The only time that the oil will discolour is when the coolant reaches the oil, and that would be due to a crack in the cylinder head, or the block, which is very uncommon these days. The reason for the smoke is that the coolant is being turned into steam, by the compression of the engine's pistons.
You also speak of a strong gasoline smell. Usually that can be attributed to injectors that are not sealing properly, or the coolant in the cylinders has wettened the plugs, thusly they do not fire to ignite the fuel mixture.
Why don't you go and get it checked, and give us another ring up here for a second opinion, before you pay money for something that you may not need.

White smoke could be an indication of a cracked head, whereas water and coolant is entering the combustion chamber. could also be a blown head gasket. check the oil dipstick for a milky substance.

How do you replace the ECU on a 96 lexus es 300

My 92 lexus es300 was doing the same thing and I replaced the fuel pressure regulator and it solves the problem look the blue sensor on the top of the motor and follow the vacuum to the fuel pressure regulator unplug the vacuum and put something on it to plug the vacuum line and drive the car and see if it clears up cause its overloading on fuel that's why u smell gas

99.999999999% chance that the headgaskets are shot. The ECU will NOT cause white smoke to come out the exhaust.
That is coolant entering into the combustion chambers!
How do I know this? I have a '93 es300 and headgaskets are a COMMON issue with these engines.
While you're at it, have the serpentine belt, water pump and thermostat replaced. (The mechanic will have to 'tear down' the engine to take the heads off, anyway. Cheap insurance.)
Unless you are doing the work, you're looking at about $2,500 in repairs.
