Question about 1999 GMC Jimmy

1 Answer

Slow acceleration My 99 Jimmy accelerates ok up to about 25 mph, but accelerates much slower after that, especially when I am trying to get up to speed on the highway. Any suggestions or help would be greatly appreciated.

The Jimmy has about 93,000 miles on it. It's an automatic and I just changed the air intake to a cold air intake. The exhaust is a possibility of slow acceleration, although I'm not smelling or hearing anything from the catalytic converter. I was also wondering if a tune up should be necessary along with a new fuel filter. I also do not have a service engine light on. Any other comments would be appreciated. Thanks again Mike.

Make sure you are starting out in 1st gear. If this is a power problem, and the MIL dash light is on, codes have to be checked with a scanner. If it is high miles the egine may be done. If you are not familiar with car repair, you will have to have it looked at by a mechanic.
One simple check is the air filter. Make sure it is not clogged. Another possiblity is a clogged catiletic converter or muffler.

do a compression test while you have the plugs out to see if your power problem is not a mechanical one. A compression tester is about 20 bucks at Murrys. If you need help with the compression test just ask and I will walk you through it.

begin by droping the exhaulst, then test driving. If no emprovement, fuel delivery may be the issue. How does it idle? May need a scanner to check fuel trim readings. Do you feel any misfire under hard excellaration. check basics ( air filter, etc.) If all check out, check compression for condition of engine. If your not sure what i am talking about, you may have to have it looked at by a tech. HTH

P.S. Those engines have a fuel set up in the intake that is a spider fuel line style. They are prone to leak internaly, and cause running problems. It could be causing your symptons.

does it smell of rich exhaulst? Are some of the spark plugs black coated. Maybe only on one bank. Take off plastic cover on top of engine and see if you can see down intake for wet fuel trails. Does one side of intake look wet inside?

Motor hesitates & bucks after slowing down & then re-accelerating

HMM, it has been awhile since ive worked on that toyota motor. Check for vacuum leaks on hoses and the intake manifold. Check egr system for a dirty pintle leaving the egr stuck open. It will cause bad acceleration and idle quality. A properly closed egr cannot be blown through to the opposite port. Check for a clean throttle plate, if it is not, clean it. If it is a fuel injected engine check for bad fuel injector o rings for wear, if they leak they cause fuel burning and idle problems.

Sounds like 2nd gear in the transmission is slipping. Cars usually shift at 15-20 mph from first to 2nd. First check the trans fluid.

Acceleration is too slow from 0 to 25 mph

i would assume that your engine still runs on carburetor. have your primary jets(in the carb) replaced. normal carb primary/secondary jetting for 1.6cc engine is 105/135. primary jets basically is responsible to acceleration, secondary jets are for speeding.

i had that problem on a 93 escort and it was because the woodruff key that holds the harmonic balancer in place was broken, the poopy acceleration was because the crank sensor gets its "signal" from cogs on the harmonic balancer, which did not turn at the same speed as the crank shaft because of the drag on the crank pully (crank pully and harmonic balancer are same part)
