Question about 2003 Jeep Liberty
I have a 2003 Jeep Liberty that has recently been having its share of problems. Yesterday I discovered that when idling (in traffic, at a stop light, just parked) the defrosters stops defrosting the windows. When i began to accelerate (need to get over 10mph) the defroster starts defrosting. I have done some of my own troubleshooting and here are some things i have noted:
1. When the defroster stops working you can smell what seems to be engine coolant.
2. The blower works fine at all speeds and you can feel air blowing out of the vents.
3. The air conditioner works fine (the compressor and clutch were changed within the last month)
4. When sitting in park i have made the vehicle idle as fast as 2500 RPM's and that does not make the defroster work.
5. Once i put the vehicle in drive and exceed 10 mph the windows will suddenly defrost.
It needs service,
i guess front glass defrost fails.
and 2 things must work , AC and the defrost damper
or #3 (overloads the function)
my heater core bad and leaking.(or its 2 hoses)

If you smell coolant, there probably is a leak somewhere.

Make sure all your vacuum hoses are connected on the engine side. There is a vacuum ball mounted close to or on the fender wall. Make sure that the hose is connected to the vacuum ball. Question: Has the engine started to run rough lately? And do you hear a hissing sound or whistle from the dash area?

there is a flap to redirect the air flow under the dash, it may be an item like a pen :) that has dropped down the vent opening stopping it from moving to redirect the air ... failing that, one of the motors/cables that operate the flap has failed
