My 1998 Dodge Grand Caravan 3.3 L engine has been making a whining noise when driving. Last night my husband had to drive it in low gear to even make it to work. Now it won't do anything but go to reverse gear. What could be causing the problem?

MOST LIKELY HAS A PLUGGED TRANSMISSION FILTER.
TORQUE CONVERTOR CLUTCH FAILURE COMMON.
CHANGE TRANSMISSION FILTER AND ROAD TEST.
IF NOISE IS GONE AND RUNS NORMALLY, CHANGE TORQUE CONVERTOR AND RESEAL TRANSMISSION.
Verify that your trans fluid is at the correct level. When if at all was the trans last serviced?
If fluid is low, try bringing it up to proper level with Valvoline ATF+4 fluid. You need to used either fluid from a dealer, or the valvoline brand which is approved by Dodge.
Assuming that you still have some gas in your tank. You can check the ignition systems in your car. This will start from the ignition coil to the distributor cap. At the distributor, check the rotor for carbonization, this must be cleaned. Check the spark plug cables for cracks. And finally the spark plugs, for burnt out. It may need replacement. Before checking the ignition system, check the gas lines going to the carburetor, it could be clogged or broken. No gas fuel going to your carburetor will also make your engine stop.
SOUND LIKE TRANSMISSION IS SLIPPING.CHECK THE TRANSMISSION FLUID MAKE SURE ITS NOT LOW.ALSO IF TRANSMISSION FLUID LOOKS DIRTY DARK AND SMELLS BAD REPLACE FLUID AND FILTER.IF FLUID IS GOOD YOU HAVE.TRANSMISSION OIL PUMP AND FORWARD CLUTCH PROBLEMS.
You need to remove the starter and check the pinion gear. Sounds as if
there is a shim missing, which will cause the pinion gear to hit the
ring gear, causing noise, and considerable damage to both. Make sure
the gears are all good. Another possibility is if you bought a rebuilt
starter from autozone or somebody like that , the pinion stop wasn't
installed, or the wrong one was installed, which will cause the starter
gear to go to far out and get stuck, hitting the ring gear.
check the front engine mount. it is probably worn.
have someone shift from reverse to drive to reverse to drive while holding their foot on the brake. if the mount is bad the engine will rock back and forth as the gears are shifted. i have a 1988 caravan and it is just a few bolts to replace it. the mount i bought last week cost $17
