Shifting Out of Park Position

I had a problem with my shift not engaging into the park position. It remained in the reverse position. My mechanic replaced the linkage but now it does not shift smoothly out of the park position. I have to apply some muscle to move it to the next position. Also the positions like reverse and drive 4 don't exactly line up with the light indicator on my dash. Before I take it back give me some idea what to look for.

Look under the hood where the linkage meets the transmission. If your mechanic just replaced the linkage, he may have not replaced the pivot that hooks the linkage to the shifter lever that sticks out of the trans. Try lubing this pivot up. Also, there may be a bit of adjustment here to line up your shifter. Best idea: disconnect the link at the trans shift lever (at the trans), and work the shifter. If the shifter feels fine, then the link or the trans lever bushing may need attention. Lube it with WD-40.If the problems does not improve, look to see if there is any contamination on the pivots for the shifter assembly in the console. Coffee & soda spills will seize this up and make it hard to shift. Lube this with silicone spray. Hope this helps.

hi..

Shifting Out of Park Position - spaclear.gif A simple procedure to prevent being jammed in PARK on a grade:

  1. Do not put it in PARK until, with foot brake applied, you've secured the parking (emergency) brake.

  2. Before releasing the parking brake, apply the foot brake and move the shift lever to NEUTRAL or DRIVE.

Sounds like the new linkage is out of alignment, consult the mechanic who installed it.

Reverse lights stay on in all gears

Back-Up Light remains always ON you should check the Park/Neutral Position Switch (A/T) .The park/neutral position switch detects the shift lever position and sends signals to the ECM.
The ECM receives signals (NSW, R, 2 and L) from the park/neutral position switch.

How to fix the shift cable

  1. Position the steering column transmission shift lever to PARK (P).
  2. Apply the parking brake.
  3. Raise the vehicle. Refer to Vehicle Lifting.

  1. Position the transmission range select lever to PARK (P). Rotate the range select lever clockwise until it reaches the full mechanical stop position.

  1. Slide the black retaining clip forward on the range select lever cable end. This will allow the white lock button to be pushed out.

  1. Push the white lock button on the range select lever cable end out. This will free the metal core adjust body which is inside the cable end. Do not push the white lock button completely out.
  2. Inspect the metal core adjust body on the cable end for dirt or debris that may restrict the travel. Remove any debris by washing the cable end, the metal core adjust body, and the white lock button with soap and water. If the travel of the metal core adjust body remains restricted after the cleaning, replace the cable assembly.
  3. Lower the vehicle.
  4. Ensure that the parking brake is applied.
  5. Turn ON the ignition switch.

  1. Move the transmission shift lever from PARK (P) to 1 and back to PARK (P) ten times.

  1. Place the steering column transmission shift lever in the Park (P) position.
  2. Turn the ignition switch to the OFF position.
  3. Raise the vehicle. Refer to Vehicle Lifting.

  1. Position the transmission range select lever to PARK (P). Rotate the range select lever clockwise until it reaches the mechanical stop position.

  1. Push in the white lock button in order to secure the core adjuster body inside the range select lever cable end.

  1. Slide the black retainer clip rearward over the cable end until it covers the white lock button. Lock the clip over the cable end.
  2. Lower the vehicle.
  3. Turn ON the ignition switch.
  4. Ensure that all the transmission shift light positions (P. R. N. D, 3, 2, 1) engaged and illuminate. If you cannot perform this task, repeat the cable adjustment procedures.
  5. Ensure that the engine starts in PARK (P) and in NEUTRAL (N) positions only. If the engine does not start in PARK (P) and in NEUTRAL (N), the Park/Neutral Position Switch may need adjustment.
  6. Turn the ignition switch to LOCK.
  7. Ensure that the ignition key can only be removed with the transmission shift lever in the PARK (P) position.
  8. Start the engine and check the vehicle transmission shifting. The range select lever cable is properly adjusted if the steering column shift light positions are the same as the transmission engagements.

Hi, I own a 1997 Ford E 350 Econoline, I have the following transmission engagement problem: Truck will not start: Transmission will not engage any gear, neutral or park. The shift lever feels like is not...

The weld on the manual lever is known to break loose. First, with the wheels off the ground, with the lever in the park position, does the drive shaft lock in park? If yes or no sometimes, drop the trans pan. I bet the nut on the lever camd loose.

My 2001 Dodge Caravan's transmission is stuck in reverse.

Things haven't changed much...look on top of the transmission in the engine compartment and look at the shifting linkage. Look for anything that could be interfering with the shifting. One linkage is the cable to the Shift Lever and Rod that goes down into the transmission. Remove the cable adjustment screw.
Move the shift lever rod towards the front of the Van into the Park Indent Position. Place the Driver's Position (Dash) Shift Lever into Park and then reconnect the Cable to the Shift Lever and tighten down the cable adjustment screw to 70 in-lbs.
Check operation's
