I have a front wheel drive and at 120k I had noise in the back. It turned out to be a bad wheel bearing. It was tough to diagnosis because the quick check is to see if the wheel wobbles when pulled, but mine didn't. It wasn't untl they put it on a lift and found the wheel wouldn't roll freely.

Rear end howls and vibrates, most noticeable at 50-65 mph. Noise only depends upon vehicle speed, does not change with gear or if in neutral.

Sounds liike a ring and pinion on rear differential. U can pull the cover off and check this or another thing would be to check your u-joints.

Engine whine, low howl from under car, rear end noise

well i dont know about the howl but i would definitely get the rotors resurfaced they are not supposed to stop at one point if the tire is in the air and spin it by hand the tire should come to a smooth slow stop and bearings are very tricky to spot i would replace them just to be on the safe side

with the wheel bearings failure , it is very possible that the "U" joint or cv joints for the front drive were damaged

Hello. I can assist you. Rear end noise is typically from one of three things: a bad or poorly balanced rear tire, the differential, or a bad U joint.

As a matter of fact the diff can make noise on and off the gas, my own car a 1996 Corvette does this, it needs the ring and pinion replaced, is this what you are talking about when you say they told you that you needed a whole new differential?
