You must have bad ignition wires. The high voltage electricity must be leaking out of the boot(s) and arching from the moist air surrounding the coil pack. Use a spray bottle filled with tap water. Set the nozzle to mist and not stream, you want to have a misting effect. With the engine running, spray at the area of the spark plugs, wires and coil pack. Do this in a dark area so you can easily see if any arching is produced. Observe while spraying water if the engine starts to run rough. If it does you definitely have an electrical leak and need to repair or replace that part. Some people apply JB Weld epoxy to a cracked ignition coil pack housing, I would just replace the coil because it can cause misfiring of a cylinder and ruin your catalytic converter. For a 2.0 AEG engine it would cost about $70 for the part. If it were the ignition wires, they usually cost the same price.
There are a fair few things it could be after such a major job......but it sounds like the immobilizer is being activated as the engine control unit you have fitted wont be adapted to the original immobilizer control unit.i am pretty sure on a car of your age it is just a case of erasing the learnt values of the engine control unit .a diagnostic machine will be required.I would recomend a main dealer but you can probally find someone with VAGCOM who can sort it.Cheers
Amie, the Golf model in the usa market for the 1996 year is a 2.0 liter straight 4 8valves or the gti version 16valves. Your problem could be electrical. When was last time you had a complete tuneup? Oxygen sensor could also be a pest for you, cloged fuel filter? these are rather inexpensive checks you could do first,,good luck
TO PUT THE ENGINE IN U WOULD HAVE TO USE THE TRANSMISSION FROM THE VR6 ALL THE WIRING & COMPUTER.U WOULD HAVE TO FABRICATE,HOSES,WIRING,ENGINE MOUNTS.NOT TO MENTION IS THERE ENOUGH ROOM IN THE ENGINE COMPARTMENT.
I Have just checked auto data, yes the bent copy lol! system malfunction, engine will run for 1 second and cut out, immobiliser can only be reprogrammed using suitable diagnostic equip. dont mess about get it into a dealer.... or buy a free running ecu..where the eprom chip for the key reading process is cleared..
check the pre pump in the tank. Under a small cover in the trunk with three screws. crank the car an see if you can hear or feel the pump running. that pre pump feeds the main pump which is located under the car near the right rear wheel.
