A transmission shop can tell you more than anyone here. tel them what you are doing, and have them check over the trans before you install it and replace the filter. You dont want to install a bad trans.

You really need to look in the fuse box under the dashboard to the left of the driver's seat. There you will find, under the fuse box cover, the words next to the fuse!
If the cable is not broke at the hood release handle check at the grill but look closely the other end may have come off its position not allowing it to unlatch. I worked on one that it happened to.
