Have a 1998 Ford Excort ZX2 2.0L My serpentine belt just recently shreaded because my mechanic put an a/c delete kit on it and did not have the delete kit pulley lined up correctly. The pieces wrapped around the alternator and water pump pulleys as well as the timing belt/gears. The new mechanic replaced the timing belt and reset the timing and replaced the serpentine belt and made an adjustment to the delete kit to allow it to align properly. Now my car is running very rough. I'm getting alot of vibration from the engine. I can feel the car "****" when I start it and you can feel the vibration when you have your hands on the wheel without moving. I've noticed it seems to "miss" or hesitate while driving and when I go to stop at a stop sign it gets "jittery" The car did not run like that before. When I first drove it away from the mechanics shop within a mile the orange "Service Engine Soon Light" came on. They came and checked it and said it was a vapor leak code and just unscrewed the gas cap and put it back on and said it was fine. I mentioned to them how rough it was running. They said it was fine and that if a car jumps time it will run rough. They suggested new plugs and wires even though I have had them replaced withing the last 2 years. The car just turned 200k miles and has never...ran this rough except just before the timing belt broke about 5 years ago. What should I have them do. I don't feel safe driving the car this way and I am very concerned that unless it is fixed properly, it will cause damage that was not previously there. Please help.

According to the Gates Timing belt guide this is an interference engine. Have a compression test performed to see if any of the cylinders are down. It may have bent valves or other engine damage if the old belt skipped teeth. Otherwise the new belt may not have been lined up correctly. Take the car to a reputable mechanic and have the cam timing checked and also the compression test done

Just check the fuse box for busted fuses. They are properly labelled as headlights, park lights, etc..
Also check the wirings for short circuited lines. Further-
more check the bulbs, if these are still ok.

The timing belt on my 2000 ford excort broke will it mess up anything else

If it is an interference type engine valves might be damaged along with piston heads. If a 4 cylinder not an interference type but new belt requires mechanical timing when replaced.

Are these "mechanics" ASE certified? I ask because it sounds like the stupid things an ASE certified mechanic would do. That patch on their shoulder is there to give people a false sense of security (they also get a chip to go on the other shoulder).

After the fuel cap was tightened, did the Service Engine Soon light come back on? If so, go to an auto zone or other parts store and have them hook up a code reader. They do it for free and you can be sure they wont lie to you.

Doing a belt and AC delete should be simple. Obviously not for some. Even doing the repairs afterwards should also be simple. What may have been a challenge to this mechanic is installing the timing belt. Off a tooth or two and it wont run properly. Many cars today also need special tools for doing timing belts. The mechanic may not have had any special tools and attempted it anyway.

And as for resetting the timing, I'm not so sure it can be done on that car.
1, many vehicles have been DIS (distributorless Ignition System) for many years
2, Many vehicles 96+ cannot be adjusted.

I'm thinking those mechanics are full of BS and may have gotten the timing belt off.

How to put serpentine belt on a 2004 taurus. instruction & diagram

The 8th digit of your car's VIN (vehicle identification number) tells you the engine
type for your car - your choices for Ford Taurus are U (3.0L), and S (3.0L).
I've included the Ford SHO engine too.

Water Pump belt for Ford 3.4L SHO engine

REMOVAL AND INSTALLATION
  1. Attach a 15mm socket or wrench to the bolt attaching the tensioner pulley.
  2. On all 3.0L (OHV) engines, rotate the drive belt tensioner clockwise to relieve belt tension and slide the belt off the pulleys.
  3. On 3.0L (DOHC) engines, rotate the tensioner counterclockwise to relieve belt tension and slide the belt off the pulleys.

To install:
  1. Install the drive belt on all the pulleys except the tensioner pulley.
  2. Rotate the belt tensioner as outlined in the removal procedure to relieve belt tension and install the belt onto the tensioner pulley. Make sure the V-grooves make proper contact with the pulleys. Make sure the spring keeper releases or improper belt tension will occur.
Tip: you may want to get (free) a serpentine belt installation tool kit to help with this job.
Both Advance Auto Parts and AutoZone wisely have loan-a-tool programs that permit you
to borrow (for a deposit) their serpentine belt installation kits - which allow their
handy customers to use their auto parts rather than towing it to a garage.
