Oil Pump Oil pressure went down and a puddle of oil under the car. I assume it is the oil pump. The filter was dry. How do you change the oil pump? If I can't do it my self can I put more oil in the car to drive it to a repair shop without it harming the car? Thank you.

Well you have a main seal go out. what this means is there is an oil seal on the crankshaft behing the harmonic balancer. you also have a rear main seal this is on the crankshaft which is bolted to the flywheel and mounted to the transmission. if there was an oil puddle that means your oil pump is probably still good, however the replacement of the seal is not as easy as you might think. it is time consuming and tedious. If you wish to do this yourself, go to Napa or Oreilly's and spend the 20 bucks on the repair manual. it will have step by step instruction on your particular problem as well as other repairs. this is a good investment and will save you on labor costs. please rate this thanks and good luck keep me posted

that would not be a good idea you could possibly sieze up the engine and that is a costly repair. you should have it towed.

My 2005 Envoy's low oil pressure light will come on when I am at a stop and my car is ideling. My oil gauge will also drop. I just change the oil and filter about 1 month ago

When engine is idling the oil pressure sign can come up and that is OK. However if you've noticed that gauge shows much lower oil pressure that a bad sign. Show it to knowledgeable mechanic (but don't be lured in the engine replacement; ask for a root cause - it may be oil receiver or oil pump). Also I hope there's no oil puddles under the car? What about oil level?

What causes a2004 jeep grand cherokee oil pressure gauge to go up and down

Not enough oil in the engine. ( I assume you have checked this.)

Too much sludge in the oil pan. ( I assume you have been changing you oil regularly.)

Bad Oil Pressure Sending unit. (Most probable cause.)

Bad Oil Pump.

Loose electrical connection at either the Oil Pressure Sending Unit or at the dash console.

Oil linking by oil filter

The pressure relief valve is built into the oil pump. What you must do is have the area around the leak cleaned of all oil and dirt, then get under the car and try to see when the oil leaks where it seems to come from, I think the sending unit is around there for the oil pressure, it may be the problem, but do the cleaning 1st.

My 99 firebird had low oil pressure, when i first started it it had a tapping noise for the first second or two then went away, had the oil changed and the pressure is still low, could it be my oil pump...

It can be a weak oil pump or sludge buildup. Have an oil pressure test run to verify this. I assume you are using the correct weight oil 5w30 and a quality filter such as AC/Delco, Purolator, or Wix. If not, change your oil and filter again with the correct weight oil and a good filter.

I have a VW tdi (t4) transporter, which occasionally (2 months ), shows a red oil pressure light for a short period and then, ofter checking the oil is OK it is fine to drive. Today it did the same, but...

The red pressure alarm light is normally activated if you do not have enough oil flow and pressure to the engine.
It can be caused by:
  • Not enough oil: check level and top-up. Engine might be burning too much oil or leaking.
  • Clogged Oil filter: change oil filter and oil.
  • Leaking oil seals: check for any large oil stains and drips under the car.
  • Oil pan pump faulty: you need a special tool to check the oil pump pressure - see your auto mechanic.
  • Oil pressure sensor is faulty and causing false alarm: see auto mechanic.
Hope the above are of some assistance.

Changed lifters and oil pump and still have no oil pressure guage and sending unit are good had oil pressure before i changed the lifters

It could be that the oil pump is not priming because it is dry. Try by removing oil pressure sending unit and using a pump oil can, squirt at least a cupfull of oil into the hole and then replace sender. Also completely pre-fill oil filter before screwing it on. If that does not work you will have to remove oil pump and ensure all the gears are completely soaked in oil before installing as well as that described above.

I have a 2006 Dodge Charger. I got the oil changed last Saturday and then Sunday night, the car shut down after the oil pressure light came on. The mechanics at two different shops said it was the oil...

The engine is toast. So you shut the engine down yourself, or it shut down on its own? Who changed the oil? Was it the correct oil and filter? It appears something isnt right. Make sure the filter didnt come apart and plug up any oil passage. Oil filter companies will help out if indeed their filter caused a problem. Eng may need to be disassembled and the cause found. engines dont just lose oil pressure for no reason.
