Question about 1997 Pontiac Sunfire
While parking my car at the store, I thought I shifted my car from Drive to Park. But for whatever reason, I shifted it only in Reverse. As my car started to drift backward out of the parking stall, I made a horrible mistake by shifting the car into Park when my foot wasn't on the brake. When I tried to restart the car after shopping, nothing happened. My manual said I screwed up the transaxle. Two questions: 1. Is the manual correct? 2. If so, how much should I expect in repair costs?
I do not know what you are looking at in the manual, but you probably heard a horrible noise when you put it into park, as the parking pawl tries to hold the car in place. Thist usually does not harm the transaxle. If the engine won't start then something else happened, perhaps the neutral safety switch was damaged or knocked out of adjustment. You might try to move the shifter back and forth and then back into park and then try to restart. If that doesn't work try to put the car in neutral to start. If you must have the car towed somewhere the repair should not be expensive, just have them reset the neutral safety switch.

The body control module (BCM)
The powertrain control module (PCM)
With the ignition in the ON position, battery positive voltage is supplied to the automatic transmission shift lock control solenoid. The automatic transmission shift lock control solenoid receives a ground from the BCM. When the automatic transmission shift lock control solenoid is energized, the shift lever mechanically locked in the PARK position. When the driver presses the brake pedal the PCM sends a class 2 serial data message to the BCM. The BCM turns OFF the ground control circuit and this de-energizes the automatic transmission shift lock control solenoid. When the automatic transmission shift lock control solenoid is de-energized, the shift lever may be moved out of the PARK position. The BCM determines transaxle shift lever position through a class 2 serial data message from the PCM. The PCM receives inputs from the park/neutral position switch and determines shift lever position. When the BCM receives this information and determines that the shift lever is out of the PARK position, the automatic transmission shift lock control solenoid ground is opened.
