Question about 2004 Chevrolet Aveo

Timing belt I changed the timing belt and have no compression. Why would this be? I believe the timing is accurate. I checked the plugs and those are good.

The description you give of your problem leads me to believe that you may have a bent valve. The way to check this problem is to do a compression test on each cylinder. You should have a compression of about 120-150 psi on all cylinders. If you come up on a cylinder with a much lower compression, this will tell you that a valve is bent. You will have to take the head off and have it serviced. This is what happens when timing belts break due to an extended time not being changed. Scheduled change times are at 60,000 miles. My 91 honda accord is very slow at take off, no smoke,new plugs and wires and timing belt


Questions:
Is it a carburetor or fuel injected model?
Did the slow take off occur before or after you changed the plugs, wires, and timing belt?

If it started after plugs, wires, and timing belt, I tend to believe the timing relationship between the cam and crank has changed (cam and crank are not timed together properly, off by a tooth or two). Unfortunately you will need to partly tear into it again to verify the timing marks used when the timing belt is changed are perfectly aligned.

Check to see that all your timing marks are still in line at TDC No1 cylinder, compression stroke.. Sounds like the engine is trying to push against itself.

Changed serpentine belt still not running, checked timing belt, it looks fine. checked compression, read 20, 20, 40, 20psi, from left to right if looking from front of car.... help.


If the spark plugs were fuel fouled, you could have washed the oil off the cylinder walls causing the low compression.
Or the cam timing could be off because the timing belt jumped a few teeth, or the cam gear broke.
I would pull the fuel pump fuse or relay and try to dry out the cylinders first.
And re-check the timing belt. The serpentine belt would not have any connection to the car not starting.

We have replaced timming belt but cant get it to start


Double check and make sure you are set to #1 TDC then verify you have the timing marks aligned correctly. This happens a lot when the timing marks slip and the vehicle is 90 to 100 degrees out of time. If it were 180 degrees out it would start but run very rough. If you replaced the timing belt because it broke while the engine was running do a compression check or connect a small compressor to a line you can screw into the the spark plug holes and see if you have any compression or in 2 or more cylinders have no compression. If this test is true your valves are bent and you will have to have the head rebuilt.

1999 kia sephia cranks over but wont start, sputters like it wants to now and again and in between sputtering it spins fast without that "thump" of compression it normal has. replaced fuel pump and fuel...


check your timing belt put no 1 cylnder at top dead center timing mark at 0 remove your distrebuter cap and see if the rotor is pointing at number 1 spark plug
if not replace that belt (replacement is at 60k I believe) sounds like the fix good luck CJ ps no. one on compression stroke

could be the timing belt. they should be changed every sixty thousand miles. If the car sounds like it spins over real fast could be the timing belt. Take off the timing belt cover to look at it or pull a few spark plugs out and check for compression. If you have no compression most likely is the belt. If you find the timing belt did break you have even more trouble because you have what is called an interference engine which means if the timing belt breaks the valves will get hit by the pistons and bend them then you will need major engine work. Although it could be your fuel pump too. check for fuel pressure and also check to see if you have spark at your spark plugs. so many different things can cause a car not to start.

Need to time the engine ..trying to put new timing belt on it accidentally moved the top sprocket a bit and lost original timing not starting now...worked perfect before need to know how to put it


you will need to pull the distributor cap off and pull the #1 plug out and timing covers need to come off leave the harmonic balance on or take it off an put it on temporally so you can line up timing marks. with the #1 cylinder at top dead center and the rotor pointing to #1 plug put air into the cylinder to see if it holds compression if it does your in the right postion. Next trun the crank until the cylinder is at the top of the stroke power stroke, next make sure the harmonic balancer marks are lined up next look at the two timing gears I believe they are supposed to point towards each other if not move the one you think is wrong one tooth in the direction oppisite of the way it slipped if it is not lined up you will not have compression pull valve covers off so you can see the valves both the valves should be fully closed on the # 1 plug if it is your timing should be right if one is slightly open then tuen it till the #1 valve is closed and the gear marks line up then slide the belt back on once you are sure you have it set correctly put it all back together to set the timing with the light look at the hood and under the hood it will tell you how to set the timing and how many degrees they very from engine to engine where it was manufactured for and you need to follow the emmison sticker timing proceedure, if you need more information let me know.

Jumped timing?


It really does sound like the timing went out of whack. The timing belt should be replaced periodically, according to your owner's manual. It may have worn and stretched just enough to slip over a cog a bit. Remove the timing belt covers and check the alignment of your cam and crank. There should be subtle marks on the cogs and the rear cover or casting. The compression will be good during a cranking test, but will not be ok during a running compression check. Replace the timing belt and check the pulleys. If your timing belt did not slip, the timing chain tensioner or guide shoes may be worn and will require replacement.
