Question about 1998 Jeep Cherokee

4 Answers

Won't start My jeep just died driving down road. It will turn over but not start. I have power to everthing but gauges. Battery is charged, gas tank is full. Turn key to accessorie position and it appears to do its normal startup diagnostic checks. There are no check engine or other alarms.

I tried a new asd relay with no luck. When I turn the key, none of the gauges move. I should at least see battery and gas gauges reading proper levels.

Personally, I think it could be a number of things.

First, as said before, the ignition module could cause this, but you also said that all the checks and stuff are coming on. This means it's still working somwhat; and still could be a source of the problem.

However, you said all the guages aren't working. These are mostly computer controlled and there isn't much you can do to narrow it down. I'd check all the main fuses in your fuse box starting with the ECU and Ignition fuses.

In the worst case scenario, you may have to just grudge down and haul it out to a mechanic. What I would personally do in this case (since the ECU is obviously still starting up with the pre-ignition checks). Find a mechanic that would bring their ODBII reader with them. If the mechanic has a decent model of reader they can do a test on the ECU itself and see if it's having a problem.

ECU's can go bad, but isn't very usual to see them die. It could just be a loose ground or bad wire somewhere also causing this headache. As I said before, it could be a headache coming from almost anywhere. But since it will not start, I'd check into the ignition module and ECU.

I hope this helps out. I know these car issues can be frustrating at times. But sometimes there are things that just have to be handled by a first person professional.

Dose it have spark? If not, the connector for the igniton could be loose or off completly. There has been a few problems with this connector. If you do have spark, I'ld need more info to diagnose.

I recently had one of these in my repair shop and it would do this when the engine would get hot. I found out that the crank position sensor wasn't giving a signal to the computer causing this same problem. If it sits for a little it may start back up. It could also be another part called the auto shut-down relay. The relay runs fuel pump and also spark. The relay is located under the hood in with the other fuses on driver side. It is usually marked as ASD Relay. Hope this helps.

I would ask myself , when is the last time the fuel filter was changed ?
check the fuel pump relay also !!!! Check the fuel pressure by disconnecting the fuel line , attach fuel pressure gauge , turn it on , look at gauge to see how much pressure it has?

here is a link that may help .also you can contact Scott the mechanic in the video . Very friendly guy and knows his stuff .

Was just driving down the road and it died will not start back up, shows the battyery is dead and the gas gage is not reading . Tryed to jump it off and put gas in it but still a no go. ???????

Maybe a bad fuel pump. After you get the battery charged remove gas cap and listen in tank while another person turns key on you should here a buzzing noise that stops after 2 to 3 seconds.try this a couple of times. If you here nothing it is most likely the pump

My 1997 jeep grand cherokee limited died on the road now it wont start back battery is still good it seems like its out of gad but there is gas in the tank

If you can hear the pump running inside the tank right after it stalls and you turn the key to the run position, I'd be looking at the crank position sensor. If that fails, fuel will reach the fuel rail but the injectors won't fire. Also check cam sensor, pump relay and ASD relay in power distribution center.

Driving down road turn on headlights gas gauge then all gauges drop to nothing a beep starts then engine dies

Check battery to motor and battery to body ground for corossion. Also check motor to body ground strap condition and for corossion under mounting bolts. Poor grounding can cause all kinds of electrical problems
