Question about 1999 Pontiac Grand Am GT

1999 Grand Am overheating

I have a 1999 Grand Am with 3.4 liter engine. It overheats when i'm driving it. I let the air pressure out of the system then i can drive it another couple miles and the pressure builds back up, not sure what to do now. I have changed the water pump, head gaskets, coolant cap, hoses, temp pressure switch and the thermostat. Would like to know what is causing the air to get back into the system? Any help would be appreciated, this car is driving me crazy.

It worked for about two weeks after the head gaskets were done, then one of the readiator hoses had a hole in it. It has built up pressure in the coolant system since then. I can release the pressure and it doesn't heat up initially but after about 5 miles it builds up pressure again and the temp goes to about 260.

It was done by a local machine shop who I have had do several heads for me and none have ever came back to be bad. So i'm at a loss for answers, but thanks for replying and if any other suggestions I would really appreciate them but i will check out the warped head suggestion. thanks

I have a 1999 Grand AM SE. I changed the thermostat, the water pump, the reservoir, the bleeded screw and put sealent in the the radiator by way of the reservoir. After a few mile the temperature gauge registars 220 and shortly after some more mile the coolant light comes on. Water soaked my floor twice. What should I do?

Who did the head gaskets? After those were changed, did it work ok for a little while?

Sounds like you may have a warped head. If you did it yourself, did you use a straight edge to check the head? If you had someone else do it, I'ld take it back and ask him what did he all check when he had the head off. Don't tell him that your having problems, just that you want to know. If he dosn't say he did, then ask. You might be able to work with him to get it done for free. If not, sounds like you could take him to court to do it or to have another mechanic do it. I'm not ase certified, so go to another ase mechanic and ask him about the warped head suggestion. I belive he'll tell you the same.

machine shop or mechanic's garage? You never did say if you did it yourself or if someone else did it for you.

1999 grand prix gt overheating. Changed thermostat, water pump, upper radiator hose. Please help!

does the upper and lower hoses seem to be the same temp when car begins to overheat? ore the radiator cooling fans coming on before the car overheats? did you pressure test the cooling system and radiator cap? also may want to remove the lower hose and flush the radiator. is the check engine light on and does it run bad?

I have a 1999 Pontiac Grand Am GT and it is overheating. We have changed the thermostat, water pump and tried flushing the heater core. It didn't work the car is still overheating and when the heat is...

if you have done all you said you have their is only two things left i know of that will cause them to overheat and the first thing is if its the 4 cyl 2.4 litre it is probably the head gasket blown really common on the 2.4 engine. If it the 3.1 litre engine they have two bleeder valves that when you flush the out or they get low on antifreeze they get air in the line and stop the flow of antifreeze getting threw the engine causing them to overheat and possibly damage your engine. Hope this helped out with your overheating problem.

1999 plymouth grand voyager overheats when the ac is on

when the ac is on the computer is looking at pressure in the ac system to control the cooling fan operation if the pressure is increasing the cooling fan is commanded on now if the pressure switch is bad or if the ac system is low on refrigerant it is not building pressure and the cooling fans are not going to come on.

Overheating and A/C problems.

If you get cold air when the heater is on, you have lost quite a bit of coolant. Now the question is what caused you to lose your coolant.

As long as you didn't drive around with your engine overheating, your engine should be fine. I think you would know if you had damaged your engine.

When the engine cools, fill your cooling system, start it up and check for leaks or overflow. If the only water your see is from the overflow when the engine starts to overheat, then it very well could be the water pump or thermostat. Chances are the thermostat will need to be replaced anyway.

If this doesn't solve your problem, write back.

1999 Pontiac Grand Am Overheating

I had the same problem on my 1999 Pontiac GA 3.4 litre. Replaced a bunch of stuff. It just kept pushing the coolant out the overflow once the temp got to 200 + like to drove me nuts. Ended up being that reservoir. If you measure the O.D. of the cap(brand new cap) and the I.D. of the reservoir filler neck there is no way it will seal(even tried to fit a different type cap,no luck). The system has to be able to build pressure or the coolant will boil out at 212. Causing the coolant to be pushed out the reservoir. Why? you say or How? did the filler neck increase in size. I dont know but GM has write ups about this problem. They say sand it with a piece of sandpaper to smooth it. Maybe someone sanded it way to much?? Around $40 bucks and I was on my way. Hope this helps someone.
