There is an amplifier located under the passenger side rear trim panel in the cargo area, the radio is just what they call a head unit, the amplifier provides the sound, that is most likely your problem.

Turn the radi volume up high

Can you hear any hiss or noise?

If Yes..then the problem is your radio or aerial.

If NO , then the problem will usually be the speakers

Check connectors+wiring

No volume from the radio


either speakers are blown or radio output is null, if you don't listen to the radio loud most likely it is your radio has lost output.

Where can I get a speaker wiring chart for 97 Ford Explorer


Perhaps there was another system installed at another time and someone cut the wires within the system to make that particular stereo system work. Inspect the wires all the way from the decks wiring harness to the speakers, they could be cut and you might be able to splice the wires and reconnect them or you may have to run seperate speaker wire for each speaker to resolve this issue.
