ok, it is the main solenoid that goes to the distributor, has a spark plug wire coming out of it to dist. Also the casing of dist. has a crack. I have gone through 3 alternator in a year and it is now won't start until is jump it or charge it. has half jucie left. It's following the past where the alternator will go bad again. Please bare with me, I do as much work as I can on my runner, female, so my part naming may lack a bit.

is it a dark hole and should there be white residue in plug at distributor?

  • janis bettencourt Sep 12, 2008

    that's it?
    yes?!!

My runner will not start unless I jump it or charge battery. I have gone through 3 altenaters in a year. Sometimes it will start, each time fewer and fewer until I'm dead. I check distributor and notice crack in casing and the plug from solenoid has a white residue inside. Is this normal and what else should I check?

ty for your reply, however that is not what I have in runner. It is flatter I don't think it's called a distributor, but the plugs come out of it. Would the crack cause mt problem? You are referring to the belt of alternator?

There are many solenoids in your car, what solenoid are you looking for?

To start if the distributor has a crack it must be replaced.
Water and dust can get inside and and it can fail at any time.
    Here is the Distributor.
Regarding the alternator failing three times, there a mechanic should check voltages, and check that the serpentine belt is in tension.
If the alternator fails, the car keeps going for a while, then the battery dies.

Sounds like possbly your old starter might have been good starting solinoide is bad, did you replace both starte and soliniode if not replace the starting soliniode should fix problem. If you bought a rebuild it might be bad. take it to Auto Zone they can test both the solinoide and starter.

Just a click? a solid click like the solinoid(bendix) is engaging? Two possible options, the solinoid is bad, or the starter motor is bad. If you have fair mechanical skill, you can try shorting around the soliniod with something. Be forewarned this can be dangerous. If it is the soliniod, sparks will fly as the starter tries to turn and unless you have something specifically made for it, it is likely whatever you are using will get hot! With the configuration of Jeep starters, you can use a screwdriver..... Or, take it out and have it tested...

1995 nissan maxima doesnt start when cold, just clicks, and after trying for 5 to 10 minutes it finally starts... Please help me out...

it is one of two things.
  • the starter is either worn and brushes not making contact or an engine oil leak onto the starter. thus keeping the brushes from making contact you can check this by banging on the starter while someone trys turning the ignition back and forth to start.(making the click click click)

  • ignition switch is weak, not providing enough voltage from the to kick the soliniod all the way to start the starter

The way to check that is to hot wire the starter soliniod little wire, to battery voltage. (the big cable on the solinoid)
If it turns over good, then you can either replace the ignition switch or install a relay someware near the starter to supply it with propper current to kick the solinoid all the way to engage the motor.
The relay acts as a remote starter switch that feeds more direct power to the starter solinoid. Now the only thing the ignition switch is responsible for, is trigger the relay.
