Question about 2002 Volkswagen Passat

2002 VW Passat turn signal "ticker"

The "ticker" on my turn signal (not the light itself) often continues ticking after the turn is completed. It usually does this 10-20 times, very fast. It does not happen on all turns, and sometimes the ticker just ticks once or twice while I am driving (the turn signal lights do not come on).

I've replaced the hazard swich/turn signal relay twice. This does not help. I removed the radio because one dealer (who wanted to sell me a new one) told me that some controls run through the radio electronics. This did not help. (Although some of the controls on the radio, ie. the steering wheel remote buttons and the lighting of the radio panel, have stopped working.)

Anybody have a suggested solution?

There iws a contact under the steering wheel called the rotating contact spring, this may be the cause of your concern. That would explain the controls that don't work as well.

Check that all bulbs are working, if one of the indicators light is gone it will tick faster.

When this happens usually you have to replace the indicator light relay, you find it in the fuse box.

If the relay had been replaced, and it is fine, then it is a problem on the wiring. Get a repair manual, like Chilton on Haynes, grab a tester and test wiring, starting from relay to lights, then if everything is fine, you proceed testing from relay to instrument panel.

The turn signal fuse may have blown, or The Turn signal/4 way [ tick tock ] relay has failed. Just replace it, and away you go.

How do I replace the front right turn signal on a 1999 VW Passat?

VW passat for model year 2001.5 – 2003, except HIDs). These were done on a 2001.5 Volkswagen Passat 1.8T. seem to be too wide for the wiring connector. Avoid touching the glass of the halogen bulb with bare hands. For easy access to the headlight’s bulbs, the cover shown above needs to be pulled out. As a reference, the arrows show what holds each other together. This will be helpful when placing this cover back. WARNING: Avoid touching the glass of the halogen bulb with bare hands. Use alcohol to clean off any contaminants. Read this book for VW service and repair manual complement. http://www.ebooksquad.com/2007/10/10/replacing-headlight-bulbs-for-the-vw-passat.html
