I have been told there is a plug on my catalytic converter. I cannot seem to find it. The machanic told me I can open this plug to let the build up fall out to eliminate the pieces that is causing the rattleing ?

The plug is on the bottom of the cat which is located after the manifold on a stock chevy...open it and blow the metal out of the cat and then put the plug back on. Looks like you have a catalytic converter but now you will not! Thats ok because your vehical will run better because it can breath and it will increase your mpg. ....gearhead 91 k1500

have car checked for a plugged catalytic converter by a reputable technician. A clogged catalytic converter results in a loss of power. The catalytic converter is made of an aluminum oxide honeycomb coated with platinum and palladium. These components react to remove CO and HC's from the exhaust stream. A two-way catalytic converter works by oxidizing CO (carbon monoxide) and HC (hydrocarbons "unburned fuel") to CO2 (carbon dioxide) and water. A three-way catalytic converter also removes NOx (oxides of nitrogen) from the exhaust. NOx is formed at high cylinder temperatures. The EGR system is responsible for inhibiting NOx. before you go changing out the catalytic converter realize that the engine light comes on with only a few percent of the catalytic converter plugged - so before you change it, clan out the engine combustion chamber. i did this on my ford Taurus and with a $5 can of carb cleaner, it solved the problem
Catalytic convertor fails due to oil burning, recent head gasket, improper fuel control, but plugging up at 3000 mile misfire surely plug it up when the vehicle is dumping gas in the catalytic, lean misfire ,running very rich due to a coolant temperature.Who is putting this on?I dont know what state you are from,a catalytic should not be installed unless the vehicle is in proper fuel control.and whoever installed this should foot the bill. You need to claim warranty regardless and plus there is a EO# that must match the vehicle.
The answer to your first question is the Oxygen sensor bank 2. Its the oxygen sensor after the catalytic towards the rear of the motor. For the other DTC there is no P01159 DTC, P0159 is Bank 1 Sensor 1 Oxygen Sensor bad, P1159 is an air intake leak or a MAF (Mass Air Flow Sensor leak)
You don't say if it is something new! Several possibilities are: something in the fuel tank plugging the suction pipe......a dirty fuel filter in the rear.........or dirt getting into the carburetor jets............a bad catalytic converter that is plugged.
It's something you can with simple tools, you have four O2 sensors. Your going to have to get the truck rescanned or if you have the DTC code, you can find out which O2 sensor has gone bad so you can replace it. Your going to have Two upstream O2 sensors on each exhaust bank, one O2 sensor before the Catalytic Converter, and the last one after the Catalytic Converter. Its like replacing a Spark plug and you can pick up the O2 sensor at any large Auto Parts store with a can of WD 40. Just unclip the wire leads to the O2 sensor and then with a O2 sensor socket or hint close end wrench and hammer, you can remove the O2 sensor from the exhaust pipe. Good luck and be safe.
Was a leak down test performed on the motor? This will determine if the oil loss is due to bad rings or a head gasket.A head gasket can be repaired, rings will require an overhaul or new motor.Have checked the coolant for oil contamination?
Also if you want to test the catalytic converter before you replace it. To do this remove the Oxygen Sensor thats located after the converter and hook up a pressure gauge to the whole and check for pressure. If there is any pressure build up then your system is clogged after the converter, either in the exhaust pipes on in the muffler.
If there is no pressure build up reinstall the O2 sensor and remove the O2 sensor before the catalytic converter. Insert a pressure gauge in the whole and if there is pressure build up then replace the converter, if there is no pressure build up then the exhaust system seems fine.
