What's the odometer reading?

Is there a third party alarm install?

Is there any spark to the plug?

======
Test #1

Test the neutral safety switch by pressing on the brake,move gear lever to neutral "N" then start the engine.

Check for excess free play on the linkage.
(moving parts between gear lever to transmission)

======

Test #2

Have a helper for view the reverse lights.

Shift the gear lever to reverse and check the reverse lights.

If the light does no come on then the neutral safety switch is bad.

=======

For vehicle with over 140,000 miles,it's wise to inspect the engine and transmission mounts.

A loose transmission mounts will have more free play and wear out the transmission linkage.

Please do these test and let me know the result on reply.

    When you has the key on the ignition,can you hear the fuel pump energize.

    The electric fuel pump is a in tank pump.

    Position near the fuel tank to listen for the fuel pump.

    ====

    It you can not hear the pump to prime then check the fuel pump relay.

    Check for burn relay(s)

    Re-sit all relays.

    Sometime it's necessary to step backward and recreate the problem.

    Disconnect the Crank Angle Sensor connect and crack the engine for 8+ second.

    The P0340 should be store in the ECU.

    Use the reader to pull the code.

    reconnect the CAS.

    =====

    Mass Air Flow (MAF) sensor (next to air filter hosing) is also easy to access.

    Pull the connector,crack the engine and pull the code.

    =====

    This is the only method to rule out failing ECU without going to the dealer.

    Please post the test result on reply.

    Look for word like Transponder key and transponder system.

    Plain metal only key is not transponder type key......that's mean you do not has this system.

    =====
    Did the battery cable got remove for extend period of time.

I would check Cam Position Sensor as is directly related with ignition. Power loss is due to the ECU going on "limp mode" to prevent further damage.
I hope this helps!

Hi
Pop into to your local garage and have a diagnostic test carried out.
Listen to the advise given. It may save you lots of money, especially if you start the "guessing" game.
It does sound like a part may be blocked or failed though, but the sytem needs to be tested thoroughly first.
Good luck

Engine trouble light coming on 2003 jeep gr. cherokee

If the light is ywllow, it's emmissions or some sensor. You can drive to a service center and have the codes read. If the light is red...STOP!! and check engine oil. DO NOT drive further!! Have it towed in for service.

1994 jeep grand cherokee laredo starting problems

Check to see if the fuel pump is running after it shuts down...could be a relay or the pump itself (overheating internally) Checked the fuel filter yet? Some crank sensors need to be shimmed. If it's too close to the flywheel even though you recently changed it, if it's too close to the wheel it can fail again. May not be the case but worth checking over. Also check the ceramic resistor on the left fender near the master cylinder if you have one. That too can cause problems.
