Hi there, If you obtain your codes, report back here so I can explain the probable causes and recommended repairs.
I do suspect your transmission has a fault, which the mechanics have not been able to diagnose to date.
1) A vehicle must NOT be able to start while in gear - this indicates a possible issue with your transmission 'inhibitor switch'. Your vehicle should only start in either PARK or Neutral.
2) When an Overdrive light remains illuminated (or flashes), this also usually signifies a fault has been detected.
3) Your vehicle obviously has a separate cooling system issue.
As your vehicle is 2003, it will have an on-board diagnostic (OBD2) computer which monitors all emmission controls and transmission behaviour. As you have indicated several faults, it is highly likely your OBD computer has stored Fault Codes relating to these conditions.
Mazdas have two different types of Data Connector, so I will guide you as best I can.
Transmission Diagnostic - Type 1 Connector
Open the bonnet and see if you can locate your Diagnostic connector (either by the left or right strut tower) which looks like this:
Study the following Diagnostic connection methods - your connection method will depend on which pins are present:
Method 1 Method 2

Hello and welcome to FixYa!
As a first course of action, I suggest that you replace the radiator fan motor. It can be weak and not blowing strong air that's why it overheats. Do check the coolant hoses as well. A little hole and even a mist can cause the vehicle to overheat. Please do replace worn out or soft radiator and coolant hoses.
Hope this helps and thank you for using FixYa! Have a good one!

You haven't given any meaningful solution yet to the Transmission problem I first higlighted, please go through my issues again and respond vividly.
What I mean is that the car automatic transmission can engage immediately and move without delay, but it engages with force, more over, the movement of the car after being engaged, when it wants to change to another lower gear it engages with force to either lower or higher gear. THE OVERRIDE INDICATOR ON THE DASHBOARD IS CONTINUALLY ON AND THIS MEANS IT HAS AN ELECTRICAL FAULT ACCORDING TO THE CAR MANUAL. MY LOCAL AUTO ELECTRICIAN HAS CHECKED BUT HASN'T FOUND SOLUTION TO IT YET, PLS WHAT SHOULD BE DONE? THIS CAR HAS BEEN DOWN FOR ABOUT 10-11 MONTHS NOW, HENCE I HAD TO COME HERE TO SEEK ASSISTANCE. I AM ACTUALLY COMMUNICATING THIS TO YOU FROM NIGERIA. PLEASE PROFER A BETTER SOLUTION.
Thanks very much, I guess ur suggestion looks better, I will do just as instructed, though I am currently away from where the car is at the moment, I hope to be back there in the next 2 weeks i.e. at most by 18/09/2011 I will be out from offshore. Once again thans about this, as soon as I put to test your suggestions I will get back to you.
Though I havent applied ths suggestion but I think this is a better idea and I am optimistic this will profer a better solution to this aging problem. Thanks Guru, I will get back to you once this is applied..
