Question about 1996 Mitsubishi Eclipse

1 Answer

Starting problems so its been running fine until one day i was driving and it suddenly shut off. i put some gas in it and it didn't work right away that same day i tried it again and it worked fine.I tried to drive then it stopped again after 3 secs and i cant get it to start up. the key turns over and it sounds like it wants to start - it does occasionally for a few seconds - then it stops when i try to drive off or let it idle for long time.

Many times when a fuel pump starts to fail it fails intermittenly and then it just wont work at all. so it may be your fuel pump. because it still cranks strong then it's not the battery. it may also be loose wireing to and from your distributer. that could explain why it works intermittently. when the wire barely connect it works and as you drive they my loose contact. make sure all the connections to and from the distributer are not loose. you may need to change those cables as well.

First thing is to check your transmission fluid when it is at normal operating temperature. The shutting off problem could be a lot of things.have your vehicle checked for codes, pep boys advanced auto and some others will do this for free.

I think before I started guessing, I'd go to one of the bigger parts stores where they will scan for fault codes free of charge, and see if any come up. I'm guessing no check engine lights are coming on, seeing how you didn't mention it, but may be a chance scanner will find something. The other thing I would do if no codes are coming up, is to have fuel pressure tested, which should only take a few minutes, just to confirm that your fuel pump is holding proper pressure when vehicle is warmed up. Not uncommon for them to work good when first started and they are cool, but start to act up and lose pressure when they get heated up from running for a while.

I chased a similar problem for several years. Stalled, got towed no problem found. The thing would heal and then fail at random on hot days. After checking everything electrical, fuel pump pressure etc, nothing could be found and I could not duplicate the problem. One day after being towed to a shop again, van started and would not fail but this time I had the mechanic put a clear by pass line along with a pressure gauge and I monitored the flow for about forty five minutes. Suddenly I started to see a stream of air bubbles and the pressure began to drop until the engine shut off. It was the FUEL PUMP all along and no one was able to determine that w/ all the test equipment. Went to Kragen Auto, now Oriely's and got a fuel pump. Had the shop drop the tank and install it. Have never had a problem again. Don't worry about what the mechanics tell you that it is not. Change the fuel pump

Xj6 1994 won't start

Check battery voltage and strength first. The computer needa bout 10 volts to get the car started. My battery went low when I had stored my 94 jag and I went to start it. It turned over but didn't start. Because of this it flooded it too. So I took out the battery to charge it and pulled the plugs to clean them of excess fuel. It started right away after this but blew white smoke for about 5 minutes. I thing the fuel soaked the converters. Hope this helps.
