Wut engine do u have?
Verify cap, rotor, plugs and wires.
Last solution, replace the coil thats on the firewall. Just look at the center cable on the distributor cap and follow it up to the coil.

My 1996 Volkswagen jetta wont start

If there is a spark and you smell gasoline, then it should start. otherwise make sure you smell the fuel, as it sounds like the fuel relay. not sure which one it is, but i think its a longer one than usual. also, did you check the immobiliser?

1996 jetta trekk no reverse

Sounds like you'll need a new reverse gear set. Not really an easy fix you have to remove and open the transmission. If you have too much metal in the oil you might need a new transmission seeing it probally already damaged much more like other syncros or bearings inside.

If there is a grinding noise then you have a rev. gear, sounds like a clutch issue to me.
