If you set the timing and put it on you may be lucky enough that it might be fine how ever most of those motors bend valves if it makes any noise disassemble and replace head some can even bust pistons good luck

SOURCE: cambelt change on uno turbo

By now you probably have the cam/timing belt changed on the vehicle... Here goes anyway: I changed the belt on my 1372cc (identical engine - except for the Turbo and a few odds & ends) just over a week ago by following this simple process:

Disconnect the battery negative terminal
Remove the timing belt cover
Loosen the alternator drive belt nut, tilt towards engine and remove the belt
Remove the crankshaft pulley nut (size 36) - do this by selecting top gear and have an assistant press hard on the brake pedal - remove the pulley -the timing belt is now exposed.
Using paint or tippex, simply mark the camshaft sprocket as it lies with the inside timing belt cover, do the same on the crankshaft sprocket & the auxiliary shaft sprocket.
Loosen the tensioner nut - remove the timing belt.
Check that all pulleys are still in alignment according to your markings and refit the new belt by starting on the crankshaft sprocket (the thin white line across the new belt must align with the factory marking on the crankshaft pulley) and over the auxiliary sprocket and finally over the camshaft sprocket - tension the belt with the tensioner and tighten the tensioner nut.
Rotate the engine clockwise by hand making sure the camshaft sprocket rotates twice, check the tension on the belt and make sure the tensioner nut is fully tightened and the belt is secure.
Refit the crankshaft pulley, making sure the nut is tightened and refit the alternator belt, timing cover and reconnect the battery.

The same procedure is applicable on the 999cc/1108cc FIRE models as well as the 1301cc Turbo.

Good luck.

SOURCE: TIMING MARKS CAMBELT REPLACEMENT FOR CL-T CHARADE, PLEASE

Hi Cas,

1) timing belt - see the small dot on tooted crank (small) pulley and match this with a notch ^ on engine body. Align the 'F' on overhead camshaft front pulley with lower crank shaft (small pullet). You should also alight the top pulley with a ^ on right side of big pulley when facing engine from front

In case of diesel pump:
2) cam belt - alight the dot mark on small camshaft pulley with notch ^ on tappet cover. Move and hold pump pulley and alight it with dot on this pulley to dot mark on plate to which pump is bolted.

Regards,

Gulfraz, Karachi, Pakistan

Is my 97 corrolla 1.8liter an interference engine. The timing belt jumpep and I need to know if the valves will be bent

most modern engines are interference designed. keeps the engine profile smaller for fitment in the engine bay. I have successfully straightened valves on a 2.7 V6 honda engine that snapped the cambelt. Just revved the heck out of it once the new belt was on. All ok afterwards. Did you shut down as soon as the belt jumped the cog ?

Toyota Caldina cambelt broke. Valve damage?

Sorry to say there is most likely quite expensive damage to the valve train and pistons. A new cam belt can be installed and the motor rotated to see if it is turning freely after which you would do a compression check (lack of compression will indicate bent or broken valves). I've never seen a diesel break a belt and avoid damage, virtually always a catastrophic failure.

1997 elantra wont turnover all the way everything comes on lights radio extra.... Belts move and it tries to turn over but does not ... We replaced the battery still wont start all the way

hi from uk from the symptoms you describe? it sounds like the cambelt has broken or tensioner has failt allowing belt to slip some teeth resulting in valve timing out ? hence pistons contact with valves however if you try turning the crankshaft backwards by hand using a socket or spanner? if it will turn then stop same as rotating clockwise ? this is a sure sign of belt problem did car suddenly cut out ? or some other reason ? any more info would help to help you ps advise you not to use starter again untill diagnosis of problem

Cambelt sliped or broken. does the valves bend.

what is the liter size of your engine? the 1.8L is an interference engine. generally all Audi engines are interference engines, and timing belt breakage can bend valves, the sure way to determine without detailed maintenance information, install a new belt, once the belt is on immediately run a compression test, if timing marks are good and compression fails, valves are bent.

Can any body help put cambelt back together

You need to rotate the cam until timing marks on the sprocket are in line with the head, then make sure crank shaft timing mark is lined up. Install the belt. Might have to loosen the timing belt tensioner. Put timing belt tensioner back on, rotate the crank shaft with a wrench first to make sure there's no interference. Next, check compression.

1996 Mazda s/w 2.0 ltr M5 12 valve eng# GV10E - engine turns over floods readily won't start does have spark to plugs

Sounds like your timing is out, check your cambelt hasn't snapped first, if it looks ok look to see if the belt tensioner is ok and hasn't collapsed causing the belt to slip. also if the engine is spinning over really quick you'll want to do a compression test on each cylinder.
