the van was just purchased, but on running obvious problem with v ery stiff gear change especially into first and particularly reverse, really have to thump it in.

not aware of freeplay on clutch- as just started driving this van - it is the gear changing that seems to be the prob lem. I wonder if it needs gear oil.....unsure where I can check this as was not given log book, and not too good on engines..

thanks for help but didn't make any difference. When putting ino reverse it can crunch as though you have missed the gear and then you have to really thump it in!!!!!!

One of the most common causes of hard shift is the clutch no fully disengaging, also do you put it in 2nd before you try 1st or reverse, it helps stop gear motion in the trans which eases the effort to engage the non-synchro gears, which first and reverse are most likely.

This is a clutch problem, thanks for trying is unfair as a rating, your clutch is not dis-engaging the trans all the way and the gear pack it spinning, hence the grind, reverse is no a synchromesh gear. I am sorry you don't want to hear this but you have a clutch issue!

Hi my escort van 52 reg heater will only get slightly hot 1800

I'm not particularly familiar with that vehicle but all that I have seen also have a valve that opens and closes to allow or restrict the fluid flow to the heater core. It could be a problem if you haven't already eliminated it. The air defecting doors under the dash that direct air to the floor or to the defroster are also suspect.

How much oil will a ford escort van 1.8 diesel

if you have the owners manual-look in the index for oil capacity, or fluid capacities. that should inform you of the oil type and capacity (if you change the filter as well, it will prob. take another half-quart or so. the manual should inform you.
if no manual get on ford website, and search for escort 1.8L diesel van. precede with the year of model.it may inquire whether you have a/c, 4wd, etc. may need more oil, if so.
good luck!

gear box mount is worn out by the sounds of it , you can check this by puting a jack under gear box and jack it till the engine lifts about 4" then you can see if you can get a leaver in the engine mount, hope this helps
