Water pump barring went out on my 1997 rav4. I heard it knocked the pistons into the values? Is that possible?

The water pump is driven by the cam belt and on some vehicles with an interference engine if the water pump failed and cause the cam belt to break then it could cause internal engine damage. Your 1997 Rav4 water pump is driven by the cam belt but is not an interference engine. So, not to worry as no damage has been done. Just replace the water pump and cam belt and all should be well.

Does it have a timing chain or a timing belt

In 1997 the Sunfire used 2 different engines.
A 2.4 overhead cam or a 2.2 overhead valve engine.
Both use a timing chain setup.
Hope this helps you along.
Best of the season to you.

Do I have to change my timing belt when I replace the water pump on my 98 Ponitac Grand am 2.4 Liter Twin Cam Engine

If the belt hasn't been changed in a while, it's a good idea to do it while you're in there -- it'll save a lot of labor later -- check owner's manual for belt change interval.

96 Sunfire GT leaking from seems like ever where

tinaray: I hate to be the one to tell you where the water pump is on this engine. Unfortunately they couldn't have thought of a worst design. It is located near the bottom of the motor on the exhaust side. It is driven by the timing chain and there is a fair amount of work involved in replacing it. Based on ALLDATA, the flat rate GM has supplied for this job is 7.5 hours on a car like yours with A/C.
Few cars come without A/C. It is figured as a skill level "B" job.
If you do not do this for a living, it may be best left for a professional to deal with.

The engine is running way to rich, that would be the only reason for gas in the oil, things that cause a rich mixture are leaking fuel injectors or to much fuel pressure, have these checked by a shop, also do u have a check engine light?

Water Pump Replacement

Follow your fan belt - it goes around the water pump pulley. Can be done at home with a little mechanical abilty and tools - not real fun - some of the bolts are a little hard to get to
