Question about 1996 Pontiac Grand Prix

Switching gears? Driving then a heard a sudden noise, where then i pulled off to the side of the road and slowed down. Then when I went to press on the gas it would only go to about 10-15mph and sounded like it wasn't switching gears. Haven't driven it since. Went out to turn it on and when I just put it in reverse without pressing the gas it makes a weird almost clicking noise.

If your car is manual there might be something wrong with your clutch. eduacated guess though.........

Subframe bushings symptoms

Micpherson strut or independent front. If its the MacPherson strut design of the car on your picture, then clunks on rough pot holed roads or rough dirt. Al's a weird one is a clunk may or may not be heard and /or felt upon first application of breaks. Sometimes noticeable that car travels straight then when brakes applied it suddenly pulls to right or left. If accompanied with a brake squeak then Its a wheel bearing. On independent front suspension all previous symptoms plus one. A ticking sound that is repetative or described as a clicking noise, very faint though. Usually only heard with windows rolled down and driving 20 to 30 mph with a concrete wall next to lane, which echo's the noise to driver but not when in open country, could also be symptoms of control arm bushings. Sway bar bushings only make noise on rough roads. Cabin bushings and all others can usually be visabily checked. If no cracks then its good if small hair line cracks, keep an eye on it, if large cracks and possibly with pieces missing, replace . if its a Chevy replace control arm bushing adjuster bolts. They get grooves wore in them defeating the reason your replacing the bushings as it will still have play, make noise. Etxc. Oh the other symptom is when road tilts to the right side being lower then left then vehicle pulls to right. But if road sloped the other way then pulls that way and usually no pull either way on level ground.. Some pull is natural but too much is bad. Hope it helps. What noise and when does it do it? Where and what are you doing as well as how fast and I could help narrow your possible problems.

My 97 mercury villager started slowing down and then it cut off. Put oil and transmisson fluid in it and it wouldn't stay crunk for long. Now it doesn't crank at all. ???

See if this sounds familiar: Just driving down the road and all of the sudden it just started losing power and you step on the gas and nothing happened? It dies, had to pull to the side of the road, it cranks over but won't start?
Answer 1) This is indicative of a failed/broken timing belt! If you continually try starting after this condition occurs then you could potentially ruin an engine! If it won't crank at all, chances are that the battery is completely drained from trying to crank it,
Answer 2) If the battery is still charged then the broken timing belt may have wrapped itself around your crank gear and now has the belt "wedged" between the crank gear and the housing not allowing it to spin.
Answer 3) Most costly and unfortunate, you could've ruined the engine by cranking it over without a timing belt. If you heard "banging, knocking, pinging" sounds while turning the engine over after this happened then the engine is ruined and will need replaced as the repair would be more costly than the vehicle is worth. If you didn't hear any of these sounds then likely your answer will be # 2!

I was driving down the road went to shift gears in my 91 civic 5 speed,and had no gears and heard noise and dragging on the road. i pulled over. i guess its the gear shift rod disconnected? but anyhow...

I believe it is really just a bolt. If I remember right, it probably has a shoulder on it so that you can't over tighten the retaining nut.
Funny thing is that it had to be on the road right where it happened, so you probably stopped only a hundred feet away from it.
But at the dealer, they will show you an exploded diagram and you will only have to point to it.
Your description is all they need to get to the right diagram.

Driving van down the road and the RPM shot right up and the vehicle started to slow down. Stepped on gas, no movement but RPM still went up. Stopped van and it would stay in park but would not engage any...

I had a Ford Winstar van that had this problem. There is an acceleration switch near the firewall on the passenger side that needs replacing. Unless you're very good under the hood, see a mechanic as it's a totall B**ch to get to the darn thing!

Whining noise while accelerating in 1st gear

Check the idler and tensioner pullys for your serpentine belt. I suspect the whining noise heard earlier was due to the fact one was getting a bit stiff or rough turning. When you gave it that extra fuel, the sudden load may have finished it off. Sometimes they lock up, and sometimes they fall apart. Check those items first.

Hearing noises from the driver side front and rear wheels

Jack up that side of the car and turn the wheels by hand to narrow down where the noise is comming from. You may have binding of brakes, if you are driving slow down the road and let the steering wheel go does the car pull to one side ? does it get worse if you touch the brake ? If it does, check the front.

my old honda did that too. replace the clutch, it's probably the pressure plate.
