AC wont work on lower settings

Hi,  I recently started having problems with the AC on my Chevy 1997 Cavalier 2 dr coupe model. The AC wont blow cold air on the lower settings, i.e. 1 & 2, however when I turn it up to 3 and 4 it works fine.
How can I fix this?

I just replaced mine on a 97 cav z24 on 01/24/09. In the passenger side, remove the bottom panel that is under the glove box. On the blower motor (its circular and black you can't miss it) look for a white plug that connects to it (should be about 1/4 of an inch away from the firewall). The white plug is held to the blower by 2 5.5mm screws. Remove those 2 screws (there is one screw on each side of the plug and opposite of eachother), separate the wiring from it, connect it to the new part and replace it back in. It is a simple procedure thankfully. **You must have some sleek and small tools for the removal of the 5.5mm screws. There is extrely limited room and can't be done with a convential socket wrench or screw driver.** Let me know if you need more help with it or clarification.

You need to replace the blower motor speed control resistor.

ACDELCO Part # 158706 $20.79 at rockauto.com, (best parts prices on the internet) at the dealer most likely $30-$40, time to install about 45 minutes, have no idea what your local labor rate is, here it is $130.00 per hour. The part is behind the glove box on the heater box near the blower motor.

If you have owners manual check that your climate control settings are as you expect them to be, if that makes sense. Some on Fixya do not realise they gave climate control , they think they have normal A/C and try to correct chimerical problems. Please check and repost

Hi there!

Its normal for the car to idle in high RPM in the cold start and soon as it warms up then it will go down. I dont think you are having any problem. And the Code for the gas cap usually come on when the Cap been loose for a while or when you pump the gas with the car running or a bad cap, And now you need to clear the code. Good luck

first problem is simply your radiator cooling fans (there tow of them) are not working my be due to a fuse and/or relay those fans are turning with ac on even if your car is cold and turns when radiator gots hot even if ac is off
so when your car is hot open the hood and just take a look are they running or not they just in front of radiator

The heater when I turn it on high blow it makes a noise like I can here a fan running and when I turn it down you can here it shut down. Note; the blower only works on high.

LOWER SPEEDS FOR HEATER / AC ARE CONTROLLED BY A RESISTOR. IT IS NORMALLY LOCATED UNDER THE RIGHT SIDE OF THE DASH, NEAR THE BLOWER MOTOR. APPROX. 2 1/2 INCHES LONG, HELD IN WITH 2 HEX OR PHILLIPS HEAD SCREWS. GET A NEW ONE BEFORE YOU START FOR IDENTIFICATION & COMPARING. GOOD LUCK, DR VOLT.

It seems that you have a leak, best bet is to bring it to someone with a set of gages to check the pressures while the ac system is operating. The high side should be about 150-200 psi and low side between 30-40psi with those numbers you should be running very cool. If its not that high then you most probably have a leak in the system most probably at one of the recently replaced parts or a new place, fill the system with a uv dye and recharge. drive for a week or two and check with a uv light.
