I have a 98 Cavalier Z24 and the Waterpump went out. I have a friend who fixes cars and has replaced waterpumps in other cars, but I can't find instructions on how to replace one for a 2.4L. How do I do this?

If I assume you have the 2.2L which you probably have as 88% of all 99 cavaliers have the 2.2L here is a step by step.

    To remove:

    1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
    2. Properly drain the cooling system into an approved container.
    3. Remove all accessory drive belts or the serpentine belt.
    4. Remove the alternator and bracket. For details, please refer to of this guide.
    5. Unscrew the water pump pulley mounting bolts and then pull off the pulley.
    6. Unfasten the mounting bolts, then remove the water pump.
    7. Using a putty knife, clean the gasket mounting surfaces.

    To install:

    1. Place a 1/8 in. (3mm) wide bead of RTV sealant on the water pump sealing surface or install a new gasket, on models so equipped. Install the pump and tighten the retaining bolts to 18 ft. lbs. (25 Nm).
    2. Install the water pump pulley, then tighten the mounting bolts to 22 ft. lbs. (30 Nm).
    3. As outlined in , install the alternator and bracket.
    4. Install the drive belts or serpentine belt, as applicable.
    5. Fill the cooling system to the proper level.
    6. Connect the negative battery cable, then start the engine and check for leaks

SOURCE: how do you get to the water pump in a 1999 chevy cavalier

Make sure you don't have delco loc 2 or theftloc audio system before disconnecting the battery. You should be able to do this by contacting your local dealer and they run the vin and tell you.

Before you put in the new pump you need to put grease on the splines.

battery disconnected

drain coolant

take out the electric fan

take off the serpintine belt

use a large screwdrive or equivlent to hold the pump pulley and loosen all of the bolts holding the pulley on the pump.

After all are loosened then remove from the pulley and remove the pulley.

Take out the four bolts holding the pump to the engine block.

get a wood dowl or equilent and a hammer and give the old pump a few taps to break away the old seal.

Once the seals broke loose take the old pump out.

then clean up the block,

clean everything with brake parts cleaner

put RTV sealant on both sides of the new gasket and put it on the new pump.

try not to let the gasket move around so the bead isnt messed up to bad.

put the pump in and put all four bolts in finger tight

Torque on pump mounting bolts is 18 ft/lbs

Torque on pulley bolts is 18 ft/ lbs

then the rest is just reverse of removal

This is a job for the dealer or cerified mechanic. The front cover and timing chain needs to be remove to access the water pump mounted behind the engine. The pump is driven by the timing chain and timing will need to be reset using special tools.

How to replace a water pump on a 1997 chevy cavalier

the best thing to help would be a 'Haynes repair manual', avialable at your local auto parts store. but replacing a water can be difficult if your not particularly mechanically inclined, because it often requires the removal of several other componets as well as flushing the cooling system
