The oil is probably being burned by the engine and going out the exhaust. Reasons for this are:
Bad valve seals
Worn valve guides
Pressurized crankcase due to a clogged PCV valve or breather system
Blow-by from worn piston rings & low cylinder pressures.

I hope this answers your question.

    Thanks so much !

Can I change the PVC valve myself ? I am handy, how can I troubleshoot to see which of these is the problem ?

  • Anonymous Sep 03, 2011

Yes the PCV valve is simple. It will be located in a rubber gromet in the engines valve cover. It will have a house attached that runs to the manifold.

The others are more complicated and require special testing equipment.

What can cause a 2004 VW Passat to be drinking oil. It started after an oil change.

Make sure you do have any leaks from the drain plug or the base of the oil filter etc. Does your exhaust look blue when you accelerate? The car is relatively new and it should not be burning oil, either old or new. Was the oil changed with the recommended type?

Engine ceased VW 2004 passat 4cyl. 59k, multiply oil changes from local garage, VW too expensive engine ceased. called VW they want to change me to see the car. What shoud lI do?

Let them see the car.

Did you check to see if the vehicle actually had oil in it? Sometimes small shops forget to put oil in or forget to put the oil plug back on.

It may be less expensive to go to your local corner garage at first, but now look at what it is going to cost you.

You may be able to find this engine in the scrap or junkyard. Look for a car that has rear end damage. This indicates that the engine is still good and none of the seals have been shifted because of the damage. Front end damage may cause seals to shift and have an oil leak
