86 ford f250 302 with dual fuel tanks. Gas guage shows fuel in both tanks (using the selector switch on the dash for fuel source). Select the rear tank (via switch on dash) and gas only is pumped from only the front tank. Select the front tank and it works OK. Any ideas? If some component fails does the system revert to the front tank?

It should be located near the ac controls. I have an 86 F-150 with dual tanks, and my tank selector switch is in the ac control panel near the glove box. If it is not located in the ac control panel, then it should be located in the dash near the door.
I have a1987 F-150. The gas gauge for the rear tank always indicate that the tank is full when I know it is not. I try to put gas in but the tank won't let any gas in. Is there some type of sensors inside the tank that won't allow the tank to be filled or is this a guage problem?
all you need to do is listen to hear the tank switching valve is working. It will make a soft noise under the rear cab section with the key on with the engine off. zif you do hear it sounding the switch your tank unit for that one tank you try to switch to is a fault. Sorry no illustrated diagrams are on hand, just knowledge
If it has the factory dual tank option with a electrical selector on the dash... switching a factory electrical fuel switch.......you could remove one tank completely.....either one and it won't care.
As long as you select the tank with the fuel on the dash switch.
tank switch on dash could be bad, also selector valve could be bad. are the fuel gauges accurate front or rear. like you say the rear reads full, is it?? I would try the switch on the dash first.
There is no selector valve on a 1995 ford f150 300 engine. The selector switch on the dash sends power to the pump in the selected tank. The pump then sends fuel to the engine. If engine won't run on the selected switch, the pump in that tank needs replaced.
Sounds like the rear fuel pump in the tank is not working and the float or sender is bad also. check to see if the rear pump is working should make a humming noise.
