Question about 1997 Chevrolet Cavalier

Whinning noise while driving

The noise is not like a bad belt noise. The car runs fine ,no idiot light is on but it whines as soon as I step on the gas. The faster the engine the higher the pitch. I just had the car tuned up & checked out. If I go fast enough I don't hear it.

850,000 miles?!?!?! wow
it is probably a bearing going bad in the alternator or a idler pulley. need to have someone check these. does it do it if you just rev engine some sitting still?

if you take the drive belt off and crank up and noise is gone then it is one of the pulleys. also see if noise goes away with a/c off if this is so it is your compressor. I think you will find it is going to be an alternator going bad. if you are in sc area would be glad to look at for you
