I wasn't driving when it happened so I don't know about the wheel lock. But I was told that it was put in 4wd at the bottom of a steep hill and it was attemped to put it back in 2wd and wouldn't go in and is now stuck in neutral. I've got the gearbox out and want to know the correct way of dismantling it.

You mean you can't get it out of 4WD???
Did you drive with full turned wheels to left or right with diff-lock on?? Then you have a real problem, cause you twist the shafts in the transfer case.
Let me know what exactly happened.

I have a 1994 Chevy k-1500 it will not shift in to 4 wheel drive?

trace the link rod from the 4wd shifter to the selector arm on the gearbox check that the rod is secured at both ends and check for excessive movement on the rose joints any play will reduce movement at the gearbox selector arm

How do i put my jeep into 4 wheel drive? Sounds dumb i know, but I just got a 94 jeep grand cherokee and dont know hwo to put it in 4 whe3l

near the gearstick you have another one, on which it writes 2, 4 , and low, if you put it in 2 you have only the back wheels powered, if 4 you are on 4wd and on low you have a power gear, that gives you more power on the wheels, by changing the gearbox ratio

I am trying to replace the clutch disc in a 1994

please explain what you mean by trans axle?? Now in queens english we call it a drive shaft ??because the gearbox and diff unit are all in one ,so you want to remove the drive shafts first ?? well firstly before you jack vehicle up undo the big nuts in the middle of the wheel ,then jack it up so bottom of gearbox is about 1mt high ,Then drain gearbox oil and remove the front wheels ,unbolt front suspension by lower track control balljoint ,unbolt the front calipers and then with the big nut out of the way push the drive shaft back and pull the suspension so the drive shaft comes away ,Now you should only have to remove the big nut in the other side one ,and use a block and tackle on supporting the gearbox so it stays hanging in the air and when you have undone the ancillarys so to speak you can just pull gearbox back a bit on the front side and work through the gap .Now what i do here is a bit of a cowboy trick but it works well ,and thats to drill a hole through the bell housing where the clutch bolts are so you fit the new clutch finger tight on the bolts making sure that the clutch is more or less central then push the gearbox in and make sure it closes up without pulling it in with the bellhousing bolts .Then using a 3/8 drive socket set tighten the clutch bolts through the hole one at a time turning engine with a big screwdriver on ring gear through starter motor hole ,go round twice though to make sure they are tight because of the locating stud?? ,TWICE bolt it all up and job done ,shouldnt take more than 3 hrs on my own ,but a weekend mechanic??? maybe a day ,Not a difficult job just dirty and greasy

Speedometer works then stops working

Chances are the nylon speedo drive wheel has worn and occasionaly catches gears the works and then misses and doesnt work. follow the speedo cable down to the gearbox where the cable fits into the box undo and pull the drive out and check the shape and condition of the gearing teeth, if the shape is like an hour glass with smoothed off teeth this is likely to be the problem. You may also have gearbox issues causing this wear.

Clunking sound in 4 wheel drive

Could also be a jammed transfer case linkage.. I had the same problem and it was the linkage getting jammed up and not pushing all the way and only half catching the sprocket. $10 part *crosses fingers*

Gearbox change

guess that the 5th gear is over drive inwhich case your fuel consumption will reduce on highway driving. hope u hv nice high ways!
however, watch out for overspeeding tendency.
