Question about 2001 Chevrolet Malibu

1 Answer

Problem starting I have a 01 Chevy Malibu. I have had 3 times now in the last 3 months my car not turns over, sometimes starting then just die. I have took it to a mechanic everytime after but when it is there they start it with no problem and can't get it NOT to work. I had a new fuel pump put in, in May and a new fuel filter put in only a few weeks ago when it did it to me then. It had no signs or any lights, noises anything before it just doesn't work. Everytime I take it to the mechanic it works fine, so I am at least wanting to get an idea what it could be. It broke down on me again a few days ago and am wanting to know what I should ask the mechanic to look for specifically this time, if it is something that might not show up without a light turning on, if ot could be the theft system or if it could be something easier.

Hello with out being able to see the car and based on what your explaining i would have your mechanic check the idle air control valve (iac motor) common problem on gm if the throttle bore is varnished the pintle on the end can stay stuck in the bore causing erratic idle ,stalling ,hestitation, even no start conditions

01 chevy malibu it starts but after 3 sec turns off fuel pressure guage says fuel pump is workin we even by passed tha theft system we changed the crank sensor and fuel pump relay any other ideas?

Hi Kaitlin:
3 seconds is a brutally short time to have the engine run. That's almost the same time that it takes to crank it over to try to start it. Is there any chance that it is actually stopping firing when the key is allowed to return to "run" from the "start" position?
If you have fuel, and you have spark, it will run. It sounds like you have fuel available, so unless the injectors are not triggering (bad sensor or wiring) something is killing your spark. Try checking each component separately and you should find which one is giving you grief.

I have a 98 Chevy Malibu. When the engine is cold it starts and idles fine but as it warms up the rpm's surge when I come to a stop (say a light or stop sign). If I turn it off and try to restart it...

YEP COULD BE EGR VALVE STUCK OPEN BUT YOU WOULD GET CHECK ENGINE LIGHT WARNING.YOU COULD HAVE BAD GAS OR NEW REPLACE FUEL FILTER AND AIR FILTER CLEAN FUEL INJECTORS SEE IT THAT HELPS.

2005 chevy malibu classic.... theft warning light coming on and not allowing car to start..... best solution?

Let the car sit undisturbed for 10 - 15 minutes, then try to start it. Check the owners manual if you have it. Sometimes, on various cars letting them sit awhile will allow the system to reset itself. On others sometimes rapidly turning the key from off to on, without turning to start 3 to 8 times within 10 seconds and then on the last turn to the on position leave it there until the horn chirps, at that point turn the key directly to start, or turn off first and turn to start. If all this fails, a GM dealer can reset the system.

01 chevy malibu - jacked front of car up to change brakes, when done now the car won't start; I only get a check engine light.

your security system could of locked up thinking that the car was being stolen, try this put your key in the ignition turn on the key till all the lights come on and leave it on for 10 minutes after that turn the key off for 3 seconds and then try to start this should unlock the security system if that is what happened. hope this helps

Hi I own A 98 Chevy Malibu, my ignition locked n i had to put a new ignition switch in, well now my cars tellin me Something Theft Service. Im wonder what I need to do? Iv unhooked battery for hours ect...

You need to reset the theft system. To do this, try to start it. It should start and die. Then after it dies and the theft light is flashing, leave the key on for 10 minutes. After 10 min, the theft light should go out. After the theft light goes out, turn off the key. Count to 5, then restart it. Then it should work.

Problems starting

I own a 1998 Chevy Malibu personally, change the ignition switch I had the identical issue, the switch eventually stopped turning completely, my vehicle had to be towed!! Save yourself a headache, I got one from a junkyard for 2.00, but it had to be programmed for the vehicle, I would take it to a trusted shop or dealer.
