I would change gas brands, it may be an additive they use, have seen this before on my own car, a 1973 NOVA, I went to a carb shop they sold me a Viton rubber pump, changed gas brands installed the pump and problem went away.

Rewiring entire 1971 el camino interior and under the hood

Wow, quite an undertaking. I had an '81 El Camino and wish I had never sold it. Originally it had a 267 c.i. V-8 with a Rochester 2bbl carb. I put in a Chevy 350 4-bolt main crate engine, Edelbrock intake and carb, and Hedmann headers (it ran like a scalded dog LOL). My advice is to look for a Haynes manual covering the '71 model year. They have complete wiring diagrams in their manuals, but the wire routing will be up to you. Good luck.

I have a 1971 3502v Buick skylark. The motor starts but when I accelerate it, it will crack and back fire. I checked all the wires and firing order and it's all correct. I also checked the point gap at...

Could be a damaged cap or rotor, or a lean fuel mixture.
You could try running the engine with the choke partially on to rule out the lean fuel mixture theory. It could have a faulty accelerator pump in the carb, or dirt in the carb.
A cracked cap could cause the rotor to fire the wrong plugs under load.

Well, I suggest that you do consider pulling the intake manifold. the plugged passageway serves another purpose: to heat the intake manifold, and that helps the fuel vaporize. This job is ugly, but necessary.clean the passageways in the heads also.

Your main complaint, however, sounds likd an accelerator pump issue. When you press the trhottle, a dual squirt of fuel is to be discharged into the venturi of the carb. This little squirt is to feed fuel until air flow increases and fuel is pulled through the off idle circuit and the main circuits. Typically, you just need to rebuild your carb. A trick is to be certain that the inlet and output check valves are sealing, I usually use the old ball bearing (steel ball) and tap it in it's seat, then discard that bearing and install the new one. Usually the pump fails, but if the checkballs leak, you get fuel on 2nd press and not the first press of the throttle. You need it on each and every press....
Most people dislike rochester because they are complicated, but you can dial out most any problem, as they are so complicated, although the 2 bbl is tons simpler than the quadrajet.

My thought is the accelerator pump circuit...Observe it closely.

My 1985 chevy 305 gets 4mi to the gallon

Check your ignition timing at 3500 rpm you should have about 40 degrees of advance If not, something is sticking in the distributor, either the vacuum or mechanical advance. This will cause a big reduction in fuel economy. Also, check your tire pressure. The cfm on a rochester is really not important. The primary bores are so small and they are the only thing allowing the mixture in most of the time.
