99 corolla headlights won't come on

I have a 99 corolla whose headlamps won't turn on. Fuses are fine as is relay. I am getting 12v at all three prongs of the headlight plug when turning the switch on. Any help is appreciated.

That sounds like a bad earth/ground fault, the earth connection is enough to make your multimeter or what ever your using register but not good enough to make the headlights work.
Try and locate the common earth point for both headlights and clean then reattach it.

Check bulbs, test wiring for continuity, check switches and wiring in the instrument panel.

    It can be a a contact, first check bulbs and fuses.
    then check if there is a relay that is gone, there may be a dual headlight relay controlling lights.
    If you are still getting +12 V on three wires that is wrong , it means there is a contact.

    If you have 12v on one of the two contacts and the third one to earth. follow the wiring and see if there is a relay.

In some vehicles, the headlamps always have 12v power, but are activated by grounding the other side of the circuit. Check to see if your lamps light by grounding the other pin (NOT the pin that has 12v). If they do, you need to check the wiring from the headlamps back to the headlight switch, multifunction switch, and/or the body control module, as applicable.

1995 ford aerostar headlamps


Did you try changing that head light because base from what you have said everything is correct the connections and there's no busted fuse....

As soon as I turn headlights on it blows the fuse for gages on dash no wires touching and lights don't come on gages work if I don't turn headlights on


Hi Bobbi
A 50w Headlamp will draw 4 Amps (Ohms Law 50/12=4.1)
So... 2 Low beams will draw 8 Amps.
Obviously more for high beam and high wattage Quartz Bulbs.
That is a lot for a small switch (contacts) to handle.
This is why a lot of vehicles use a Relay to power the Headlamps.
The relay is connected directly from the Battery to the Headlamps.
The large internal contacts can handle the higher current (30A) and the dash headlight switch connects to the magnetic coil inside the relay and is only used to pull the contacts closed.
Does your circuit include a relay.? Do you hear a relay click?

To assist with your troubleshooting, try disconnecting one head lamp bulb to reduce current load. Does the fuse blow?
A temporary12v circuit breaker could be substituted for the fuse until you determine the problem.


If the circuit is using a relay then there will be a fat wire going from the battery to the Relay. The fine wire on the relay input is the trigger. A 12v test lamp is really useful for troubleshooting around the car. Also a cheap multimeter. Clamp style current meter is also handy to see exactly what current is blowing the fuse

There isn't going to be additional power. How the system works is when you turn the headlights on you enguage the relay through a ground. You always have power at the relay but when you turn the headlights on, the switch supplies the ground to the relaywhich in turn "completes" the circuit so you will always have power at the red and black as you say (thought they were are dark green) below is a picture. I have marked the ground location for the low beam headlamps. That ground wire is white and black. When you switch on the high beam, the switch supplies a ground at the red and yellow wire. Not sure what your problem is as you didn't say. Are you not geting low or high beams ? Also below is a wiring diagram for the headlamp circuit. Hope this helps....

Left Low Beam Headlight won't come on!


Check for power and a good ground at the bulb socket and if they are good then i would try another bulb.

Headlamps inoperative daytime running lamps come on then go out jumped out headlamp switch ground circuit out still no headlamps.


It sounds like your DRL RELAY/Headlight relay. I had this happen with a 2000.

Headlamp doors are vacuum operated. Chk for a vacuum leak.

The low beam headlamps have a seperate fuse for each lamp in the central or underdash fuse panel.
The right headlamp is fuse fuse 26 (10amp) and the left is fuse 28 (10 amp). These fuse are hot only when headlamps are on so you need to test them with a test light with headlamps on. If they do not have power to them then concern is either headlamp switch or daytime running lamp relay if your vehicle is equipped with this feature, or a bad multifunction switch.
Power leaves the headlamp switch on the RD/YE wire and goes to multifunction switch. It leaves multifunction switch on the other RD/YE wire The wire will then go thru either a connector c2003 located behind the passenger side air bag behind the dash or to the DRL relay if your vehicle has this feature and leaves there on RD/BK wire to the headlights .

Headlights are not working


Strange headlamp problems on Saabs can often be attributed to a failing Headlamp relay. Here are a few common situations:
Issue1- Headlamp switch will work backwards: Turn on the switch andtheheadlights go off and turn off the switch and the headlights willgoon.
Issue 2 - High beams will disappear. You will havenohighbeams. Be sure to check the headlight bulbs PRIOR to orderingtherelay. Remember however that it is possible for both high beams burnout at the same time
Issue3 - High beams will not work only the low beams will.
Issue 4 - A single bulb setting (low or high) on either side will not work and bulb replacement will fix it.
Youcan sometimesfix these issues by removing the relay, taking off thecover andresoldering the connections on the relay bottom. To performthis repair, go to my illustrated tutorial at customsaab.com.
