92 model, goes completely out of gear as if transmission in bad, no forward or reverse, if you turn the car off and restart it will work fine for a few mins and start over again as if there is a electrical problem. thanks

Startup an drive for about 500 yards and seems fine. Then acts like it is in neutral. Won't forward or reverse. Turn of engine for a while and the restart. You get another few hundred yards then problem repeats. I will try adjusting the break bands and see if that helps.

Hi, check breakbands in gearbox, im not too familliar with this car but am with loss of drive in ford cars. The adjusters are on the side of the gearbox and look like 2 square pegs and should be Torqued to precise settings, But check fluid level in gearbox to rule out low level. All the best,Phil

It sounds as though the transmission is slipping. You say it works okay at about 20mph, well by then it should be in 2nd gear. And you say reverse works fine. Reverse and 1st having no internal components in common, and in 2nd gear there is a band to assist the forward clutches. So it sounds like either the forward clutches of the low one-way clutch are bad. Take it to a transmission shop and ask them to road-test it.

it may be a bad transmission modulator valve located on the side of your transmission, vacum operated. a sudden downshift or forward shift when unexpected is sign of a bad modulator valve or a vacum leak to the transmission.best to shop around for a garage w/references when it comes to transmission work though. check all the vacum lines to your transmision, you need to look on the underneath side of your truck on the side of transmission for a loose or disconnected vacum line on the side of the transmission. when you feel the vacum line, follow it to the top of engine, the vacum line is about 3/8th line, and may be disconnected or losing air. to make this short, when you drive the car, start out in low gear and shift the transmission, manually from 1st to 2nd to 3rd does it do right with no slipping? if it does this right and shifts great manually, the modulator valve on the side of the transmissions bad,or a bad vacum leak in-between.thank you for choosing fixya.com

I bought a 92 Chev 2500 4X4 from a guy just recently. He said the tranny wont go into gear. I found the transfer case was in neutral. So i put it in gear and away it goes. But reverse seamed sluggish. ...

If your transmission is a 700r4 (4l60) you have a reverse band that engages when you want to go in reverse. since it drives forward your low reverse clutch and your fwd clutch are working. This leaves the band which was probably slipping now is not engaging.

The reverse gears are not working.if you put the reverse gears it will accelerate infront instead.what do i do?

It sounds like the reverse band broke. Typically with automatic transmission when you put the transmission in reverse a couple things happen. Usually, the forward clutch engages and the reverse band engages holding the reverse drum from turning, which causes the planetery gears to make the vehicle move backwards. If the band breaks there is nothing told hold that drum from turning and you have a forward gear. The bad news is the trany is going to have to come out to be repaired and usually the reverse drum is one of the first things to go into the trany, so it has to be completely disassembled. Take it to a transmission shop have them check it, hopefully it's something simpler.

1999 F250 only goes in reverse, no forward gears.

I believe that reverse is operated by a brake band. So it seems to be stuck. It is operated by a piston, and the seal could have swelled and caused too much friction. But you could loosen up the adjustor so that it is disengaged, in order to get forward gears again. Perhaps you can force the piston to retract as well, once you drop the pan again.
