2001 Jetta TDI Automatic Transmission problem

The problem is when I stop like at a light then start go again it seems to be in neutral then drop hard back into gear.
I doesn't do it all the time. If I play with the break and gas pedal it doesn't do it, Or if I come off the highway or a long drive it doesn't do it either.
The Dealer justs wants to replace it. It has had a fluid and filter change by the dealer every 30K and it only has 121K on it. Fluid is VERY clean.
Please give me some direction.

I have a jetta tdi 2001 - 130K miles automatic transmission... same problem, at a stop the car will roll back when i take my foot off the break - even as i give it gas - it is like the engine is not in gear. Also, it seems to 'slip' between 2nd and 3rd gear... rpms will go up but no acceleration then a hard shift...

    what is the problem??? help!!

    Automatic transmission

When I come to a stop light, the car goes into neutral, so when you apply the gas to restart, the transmission kicks in with quit a clunk. Right now, I have to rev the engine slightly to get the transmission to engage smoothly. The transmission fluid and filter have been replaced recently.

    What to do?

Hello there I have a 2000 Golf that does the same thing, come to a stop and it seams to drop out of gear. Once you rev it up to about 1100RPM it seems to pop back into gear and works fine otherwise. It does not do this at every stop sometimes it works fine and sometimes it dosnt. Any help would be greatly appreciated Thanks

Hi 2001TDImh
I would suggest that your dealers try a replacement tourqe converter, before replacing the box....

Your first mistake was to listen to a parts person at Autozone and actually buy the part he or she suggested, THEY ARE NOT TRAINED TECHNICIANS! You need to take this either to the dealer or a local transmission repair shop. In Calif these parts stores can't do the testing and can't hand out advice on vehicle repair. There is a reason why a trained automotive tech makes $30.00+ per hour and they make maybe $10.00, it is called training.

Drive it slowly to a reputable transmission shop. There is nothing you can fix yourself.

Car seemed to go into nutral on own

Next time this happens without stopping or pushing gas shift tranny into N and then back into D and see what happens. The battery light came on because of low RPMs, no biggy.
