get a freind to get on the gas while in park and go under it and just start tapping/thumping/wacking on things with a hammer or a block of wood. Sounds silly, but it is very effective on finding rattles.

It may be the inside of the converter has come loose.

Why does my ford escort van 1.4 efi rattle from the catalitic convertor

It is possibly that the cat converter has failed and the bits are rattling around in the case. It may be that the noise from the rear end of the cat is the broken bits trying to get out the exhaust pipe and blocking the system

look for loose rubbers on shockies, suspension points sway bar points , front and rear , check for loose muffler rubbers or faulty cat converter rattling inside , check for loose rocks under the heat shielding around the exhaust system.

Have a rattle when car is idling. have been told it is the torque converter. box works fine

Hope this saves you a heap of dollars.Nearly all jeeps get a rattle from the cat/converter in the exhaust pipe.Crawl underneath when the motor is cool and give it a few good whacks.you might hear it rattle.Other than that,if you bring the revs up and it stops,it is the cat/conv.The internals of the cat. fall apart and rattle around at idle. When the revs pickup, the exhaustflow keeps the internals from moving around.I have seen this very often.I hope this is your problem and not the trans.Hope this helps

Rattle noice engine around the calelitic converter. rattle noice when starting car up when cold. poor gas mileage.

Sounds like you may have a exhaust loose or either the cat converter is stopping up. Some of these have baffles inside which will break loose and cause a rattling noise. When the engine is cold, start the vehicle and crawl under and hold the converter with your hand and even the exhaust to see if any pressure will stop the or alter the noise. Careful it don't take long for the exhaust to heat up. If these baffles are broke inside, it can cause the converter to become stopped up and rattle, this will also give an engine false info when it comes to the fuel and air ratio mixture. Not going to far into it, so i don't confuse you. Good Luck

Error code: Code of P0420 catalyst efficiency below threshold What does this mean? have replaced o2 sensor on cat but code continues.

I assume your Vehicle is an Audi/ VW as this is a VW fault code. The o2 sensors measure the oxygen in the exhaust gases and compare it to the out side air, there by working out how efficiently the the fuel is been burnt. The engine control unit will use this and other information to adjust the fuel quantity being injected. The catalytic converter breaks down certain gases in the exhaust fumes to comply with emission regulations. Some vehicles have an upper o2 sensor [before the cat] and a lower [after the cat]. The readings of the o2 sensors is compared and should be within a certain range. If not a fault will be stored in the memory. The Catalytic converter itself may not be working correctly due to contamination or the baffle may be loose[ usually indicated by a rattle in the exhaust]. One or both o2 sensors could be contaminated with carbon and not giving accurate readings. Also check other silencers for blockages.

My subaru forester has a rattle in the catalytic converter can it be repaired

I bet its just a the heat shield on the catalytic converter. Subaru uses very thin metal and the heat shield is bolted as opposed to welded together. This rattle is extremely common on subys.

mrmopar is right that you should replace it.

however there is a quick fix that will stop the noise. Go pick up a 6" stainless steel hose clamp at the hardware store. put the hose clamp around the cat. It should be obvious whats loose when you look under the car.

if you are a little handy its not a hard job to do your self. Just 4 bolts. You can get a catalytic converter for $200 online. Get the gaskets too. shouldn't take more than an hour or two.

You will need to put the car on jack stands or rhino ramps to get access. Once you are under the car, the parts are easy to get to.

Always, always chock the tires when your under the car. You do not want a car to fall on you.

Engine Rattling

Try checking the heat shield on your exhaust system. You should have one over the manifold and one over your cat converter under the car.
