I have a 96 jeep grand cherokee laredo straight 6. I have replaced the battery and the distributor and cap. Starter has been tested and they said it was fine. We have been having issues with it dying and then taking forever to start. Once we replaced the battery it started right up and now it will not start. It turns over(cranks ok!) but will not start. A friend told us to remove one of the spark plug wire and put a screwdriver in it and get close to metal and try turning over to see if we were getting any spark and we have no spark. He said that it is most likely my computer...(hah) but all the stuff i have been reading on the internet I am not sure what to replace... The PCM or the ECM and how do I know if it needs to be flashed over? We have also bought and returned the crankposition sensor and the coil pac because when we replaced it still did not start. Im at a loss for what to do besides drive it into a lake...lol any information you can give would be greatly appreciated. Thank you

Cranks ok, won't start.
no spark at coil. ! main HV terminal.
checked fuses, no. (that be FIRST)
scan the PCM/ECU, no. (call it ECU from now on)
hopeless lacking scanner but... ok we try,,,,
if the fear of scan tools is so bad, then you get to do it the hard long way. okay.

The ASD relay runs this show, (fuses MUST TEST GOOD)
rule 1, the ASD most close, at key on
the ECU closes the ASD for 2 seconds. to start engine.
if not the ECU sees errors (asd can drop cranked or running)
there are 1 to 8 errors, on this car less, but still many.
if throwing parts blind is good, then new ASD relay?
test 1:
turn key, hear the ASD click we use a stethoscope to hear it.
2 man test, due to 2 second rule.
it must click or its is bad, or lost power to ECU. (fuses) or other power feed issues to ECU. (key switch bad)
what we do , if our scan tool was stolen, (haha) we
measure all 4 ASD pins at the 2 second rule.(a voltmeter)
and the 4 voltages tell 4 things
ASD ok or not OK
or ECU never once turn it on, (more work, lacking scanner)
lots.

http://jeepdied.com/ASD.html

those are the ropes.
fixing cars lacking a scan tool, is like the most hard thing to do.
I can do it, but I have vast tools in my shop.
Even a voltage data logger.... to monitor all ECU pins.

The ECU is just logic, if the inputs are wrong so can outputs.'
GIGO it's called. Garbage in , Garage out.

you cant test for spark like that!
it takes 2 persons, read how the ASD works.
when it stalls. or fails to start
release key then turn it on 3 times
    if really really really lucky
the key jive test show the DTC failure
that caused the ASD to go dead or drop.

your test does work on a 1988 but it's got
french renix, ECU, and no ASD, there.

SOURCE: 1997 Jeep Grand Cherokee dies while driving

If the ignition turns on and dies while driving, you might have a clogged idle air control valve. The valve is located in the throtle body, just below the air intake hose. Locate the idle air control valve, un plug the connector, unscrew it (you will need star screw driver) and next clean it using an electronic contact cleaner spray, I use 3M for that. Next, make sure all cleaning liquid inside is gone (it evaporates quickly) and re assemble it. This should solve your problem once for all.

SOURCE: 93 jeep grand cherokee won't

If you have no spark, the most likely problem is a bad crankshaft position sensor. it is mounted on the bellhousing. below intake/exhaust manifold. held in by 1 bolt. A new CrankShaft position sensor should come with a small pice of heavy paper/ thin cardboard to use to set proper air gap between flywheel and sensor.

My 1995 jeep grand cherokee Laredo won't start, or

You might not believe this, but check your battery. Some of these vehicles have cut-outs when the battery level goes below a preset amount.
I work on Ford brands and on them, a low battery level will even disconnect the Alternator circuit and mess with the starter. Some even act up when the battery slightly dips below 12 volts.

Your antitheft can make your starter cut out. And If you think about it, all of the measurements to make the engine run are based on feedback of voltage and amperage. This is how the engine management system adjusts. If your prime source of power is low, then all of the following electrical readings will be low. Some may be too low to work.

Your fuelpump will hold pressure in a closed system for hours. The fuel pressure regulator will command the fuelpump to stop working if the fuel pressure is at maximum. Without responses from the other components and after satisfactory pressure, the fuelpump will turn off.

Try gently tapping the starter motor with a hammer or bar. There may be a bad contact in the sollenoid or the starter motor brushes worn to their limit. Tapping may give you a tempory fix if the problem lies in the starter motor.
