Re: Speedometer not working
I have the same problem with my 300zx currently. You need to replace the gauge cluster. The speedo itself in the cluster is really expensive and hard to replace. Look for one on eBay. Make sure to get the correct year though!

The starter would have nothing to do with the speedometer not working . What year ,make , model vehicle ! Most vehicles the speedometer is control electronically . The VSS - vehicle speed sensor located on or inside the transmission ,is what the PCM - engine computer uses for speed information . The VSS is an input to the PCM , the PCM sends that information to the instrument cluster over a serial data communication network or data buss , then the instrument cluster controls a little electric motor to control the speedometer . So if the car runs good an shifts good the problem could be the instrument cluster .
NO NO NO the VSS sensor has three wires 5 volt reference signal return and ground easy test is to check v-ref and ground. signal return must be tested by using ohm meter checking from computer plug to sensor one of the wires has open circuit this sensor is used to control transmission shifting also can you judge your speed better than the cops radar.
is the speedometer still working when the vehicle acts up? if so the VSS is still working. the OVERDRIVE light coming on indicates a transmission problem. most likely a shift solenoid or trans temp sensor. first thing to do is make sure the fluid level is full. if it is , have someone check the computer for fualt codes.
WELL DIDNT TELL ME THE YEAR OF TRUCK CHECK TRANSMISION FUSE FIRST.IF ALL IS GOOD LOW TRANSMISSION FLUID OR STOPPED UP TRANSMISSION FILTER AND OLD FLUID CAUSE SHIFTING PROBLEMS.FAULTY VSS SENSOR WILL CAUSES TRANSMISSION SHIFT PROBLEMS.IF YOU HAVE NEWER MODEL TRUCK FAULTY TCM OR TRANSMISSION CONTROL MODULE FAULTY.
I'm not sure with that type of vehicle, but on my 91 S10 my speedometer did not work at all also. The problem with that was the sensor that plugged into my tranny was missing so it was not reading anything. If you have a sensor that goes into the tranny it may be bad or missing so in my opinoin i would try checking that.
