I have a 1990 Toyota 4 Runner and I think I am the same problem
I recently took the car to a friends place to try out the 4wd I had put the transfer case in to L4 and pressed the 4wd button in also; before I reached the hill. At the base of the hill there was a little mud but the rest of the hill was pretty dry. I started to go up the hill but the back tyres lost traction, I noticed the the back left tyre was the only one rotating, the front tyres had plenty of traction but the tyres didn't rotate. The 4wd light never turns on I thought the bulb may have burnt out with age. I have checked all the fuses and they are fine exept the tail light fuse which keeps blowing.

Any help would be greatly appreciated thankyou

You probably have an issue with the A.D.D. (Auto Disconnect Device) on the front axle. That is what lights up the light. I'd need to know the year to get you better info. If it is newer, check the 4WD fuse under the dash. But, in any case, if it IS in 4WD, the vehicle will make tire noises on a real tight turn, and it will lurch on the same tight turn, like it is trying to drill itself into the street. 4Runners do not have a viscous coupling, in 4wd, all 4 wheels run the same RPM.

The 4 wd on my '01 4Runner won't engage. I tried "hitting" the a.d.d. actuator w/ a hammer to see if that would free it up and unplugged the 4wd ECU, neither worked. Any suggestions??

Have you check all your fuses??

Try this: Put the car in low gear, engage the 4 wheel drive, wait a few seconds (the 4wd indicator lights should be flashing) then accelerate to about 3500 rpm and let off the gas pedal all the way. You should here a 'clunk' when it engages.

How to change 4wd light indicator on 2000 4Runner

Have to remove dash panel. Some panels are easily removed others require dash removal. I would reccommend buying a repair manual (20$) and determine if its worth time, tools, and money. If your 4X4 works just fine the absence of the light has to annoy you enough to replace it

2002 4Runner - 4 wheel drive indicator won't go off

When the transfer case is not engaged for extended periods of time, the motor inside for the 4WD sticks. Try this: Raise the vehicle on a hoist, and do some tapping on the case while switching the 4WD indicator. Sometimes, this will free up the contacts inside the 4WD shift motor.

Hope this helps. Thank you for choosing FixYa for assistance.
