What kind of play? Is it a tilt column and the top portion of the column is moving? If yes, the column needs to come apart and some bolts need to be tightened. Also need some specialty tools to do it. Not something for some beginers to do.
If its just the left and right turning that has play, check the joints on the shaft from under the hood. If they look fine it could be a worn box. The steering box usually have a screw with a lock nut on the top. This pushes up against the worm gear to take up slack.
\Be careful adjusting this. Loosen the lock nut and turn the screw about 1/8 turn and tighten the lock nut. Too tight and it puts more wear on it and the vehicle wont return to straight on its own while driving. Also don't test for play while the wheels are off the ground. It would be misleading.
