Question about Subaru Legacy

'92 Subaru heater runs fine as long as car is moving --- when stationary, fan keeps running but blows cool air. Could it be my thermostat or something? David

Did you check your coolant level? Possible air in the system

Non moving water in the engine does not cool the engine so the thermostat turns the fan on to stop heat damage the car is cooled by water and air movement when driving stationary engine off the fan just stops damage.

No heat


sounds like you have air in the system, take the top off the water bottle and fill to the top run engine until fans come on and up to temp. keep filling the bottle so its at the top have the heater on but on low blow or no blow squeeze the pipes wile warming up to help move the air. you should see bubbles coming out the bottle when at temp turn the engine off and leave to cool down. you may need to top up now. but dont top up with water top up with antifreeze. put top back on and it should be fine. if not repeat. also check the valve is working and not blocked on the control for water direction will be electric type or vacuum type electric type should click when it is working vacuum type it runs off the engine vacuum line look for a leak in the line. and replace if it has a leak.

take the top off the filler cap run engine to boil. keep it full off water to the top. you will see air bubbles coming out as the engine gets hotter. squeeze the pipes on the rads to help the air come out. when fan kicks in turn engine off and leave to cool down.while you are doing this make sure the fan for heater is off but is on full heat. can have fan on number one on speed that is fine.

My 98 subaru is not running hot but the thermostat needle just goes up and down and when its all the way up and the air is on it blows out hot air....the thermostat is brand new


Well the gauge issue could be your Coolant temp switch is bad.But if the car is blowing hot air out when the ac is on,that can be a faulty thermostat new in the box(it does happen) or you have a airpocket in your cooling system which just needs bled out.Usually there is a small valve located near the water inlet to the engine just open it and run the engine until water starts coming out then close off.Or if the car is not running hot,then you may just have a blend door or the heater control valve under the dash stuck on heat so it is just letting in hot air all the time.Narrow down what it is not then you will find out what is doing it.Check the switch,check your bleed valve,then check your heater valve and hoses.All are fairly cheap to replace.

Car running hot i flushed cooling system and put in a new thermasate


If you flushed the cooling system, you probably got air in the coolant lines. It takes a while to remove it. This is done by running the car in park at 1500-2000 rpm with the heater on max and the fan on max. when the heater blows hot air you are almost done, if it doesnt, shut the car off as soon as the temp gauge is half way! Let it cool down and repeat.

Overheating radiator without leakage

I have been a mechanic for 20 years. Your problem is the heater core is plugged. The cold water from the radiator blows directly at the thermostat keeping it closed even when you are overheating! BAD DESIGN!! If you look at the water flow charts in AllData you will understand. If you rev the motor to 3,000 rpm's the turbulent HOT water at the water pump impeller (near the thermostat) will reach the thermostat to open it and the car's temp will fall very fast to the correct temperature. If you remove the thermostat it will not overheat but will run way to cold. If you bypass (loop) the heater core it will not over heat.

The hot water that leaves the heater core returns to the engine at the thermostat. It is the only hot water introduced to the thermostat to keep it open and allow the water to flow from and to the radiator. I normally just back wash the heater core and get large chunks of rust flake out then its fixed. Back wash then froward wash repeatedly many times. Also flush out the motor so you don't re plug the heater core. I hope you have now blown the head gaskets or cracked a head yet. Make sure to run the proper coolant in the car so you don't promote more rust flakes. And bleed the air out as mentioned in detail by other posters.

Nobody knows this little secret. Not even Subaru mechanics at the dealer, no TSB (Technical Service Bulletins a special note after the fact to mechanics). After days and days of trouble shooting a 1993 Subaru Impreza (2.0?) I looked at the water flow chart and then it was clear what was happening. This phantom overheating problem stumps the best mechanics and sends many Subarus to the crusher.

My heater in the Mercedes c240 1999 car is not working well. One side of the heater (left hand side is ok) but the right hand side keeps on blowing out hot air even when it is on the cold setting. Any...


the control valve unit behind the dash either broke or stuck. the car has two set of control valves, one for passenger and on for the driver. It common for the unit to fail on all cars some has better luck than others. inside of the valves made out of rubber, over time if it not move regularly it can seized from heat and it get stuck and the motor may have a hard time turning and adjust the valves itself. the only way to get to it and work on it, the dash has to come apart. the part may be cheap if it need it, the bad part is time consuming getting to it and its all mechanic nightmare and the labor will get you. The fan keep coming on, you may have to change the thermostat switch sensor, it could be faulty and not sensing correct temperature causing the fan to stay running. at the same time I would go ahead and have the thermostat it self change, you will have replace that soon or later and you don't want the car leaving you stranded and overheating. by running the heater believe it or not, it also help cool down the the engine a bit. hope that help some
