Question about 1992 Honda Prelude

3 Answers

Relay circuit for the past year i have had intermittant problems starting my car. I took it to a honda dealership and they said it was my relay circuit--they couldn't fix it that day and it was fine for a few months. It is happening on a more regular basis now and I need to get it fixed. Is this something i can replace on my own and if so, what does it look like. I am a very visual person, so a picture of the actual part would be great since i spent most of my night looking under my dashboard on my back without finding this fuse. I appreciate it very much!!

Intermittant starting problem

It's probably your MASTER RELAY. I had the same problem and so did my friend. I searched the net for an answer and always came up with master relay. I took mine out, resoldered it and it hasn't done it again. That was over a year ago. The Master Relay is right under the dash on the drivers side (on my '90 anyway). You just take it out, open the cover, resolder all the connections at the top of it and it's good as new. Apparently the solder they used in Malaysia or whatever was sub-par and when it gets old the solder disconnects after it gets hot. When it cools (usually 5-15 minutes) it will work again.
Go to this link! You will thank me. It is an extremly easy repair and works great. I was sceptical but it worked when Honda dealers, mechanics and everyone else couldn't figure it out. Don't know why more people don't know about this. Everyone I know that has a 90-93 Honda Accord has this same problem. Usually only does it when the car has been driven a short distance.

Hope that helps.......

1991 honda accord starts intermittently. When it doesn't the gas guage goes below E. Gets spark, no fuel. Already changed main relay.

Hey man if you already changed out the relay i would try changing your fuel pump and sending unit that should stop both of your problems.

Car has plenty of fuel but wont turn over like its out of gas

A common problem with this year Honda is the main relay becomes hot and the internal connections open up, causing a no start condition. I am assuming everything else is in good working condition. The main relay is located on the driverside kick panel up about 12 inches from the floor, mounted with a single bolt and looks like this;

ledsled378_133.jpg

That is exactly what a defective Main relay will do. The reason is there are two circuits that run thru this relay; One circuit is the fuel injector circuit and the second is the fuel pump circuit. This creates heat and when the relay gets old, it starts to fail. I have removed relays in the past, and placed them in a freezer for about 30 seconds, reinstalled them and the car would start. This was a temporary fix and replacing the relay will cure your no start issue. During hot summer weather is when this issue rears its ugly head. You can also open all the windows to allow the inside of the car to cool down a bit, and then try to start it.

Have you replaced the ignition switch? Passkey wire broken can cause no start problem.

1990 honda accord - intermittently won't start

there is a relay commonly causing problems in those years hondas, related to fuel pump i believe. It is located in driver side kick panel, by left foot. My friend had same problem. Not guaranteed to be the issue but worth looking into. He could occasionally get it to start by turning the key to the on position and back off about 10-12 times quickly.

My car is a 92 honda accord. it starts up when it wants too.

I had the EXACT same problem with my 92 accord about 5 or 6 years ago. I took it to a bunch of different mechanics who couldn't figure it out, so I finally took it to a Honda dealership and they knew exactly what was wrong (apparently it was fairly common in 92 Accords). It had to do with the electrical system, but I don't remember the exact problem as it was some time ago. I would take it to a good Honda dealership and they should be able to take care of it. And FYI, back then it cost about $150-$200 to fix...

Main relay assembly for 1995 Honda Accord

the relay cover slides off very easily so you can expose the circuit board take your pgmfi relay apart and you will see two small relays on the board look at the contacts for the relays to see if theyre burnt then turn the board over and look at the sauder joints at least one of these will probably be burnt or not enough sauder will be ther to make a good connection.Look real carefully at these i use a magnifying glass my self because i have seen numerous times where the sauder will have a small crack (like a ring or circle) around it causing a poor connection these are the most common problem with these relays (almost the only problems) i have seen in the past six years that i have worked at my local honda dealer

1998 Honda Accord stalls intermittently

There was a recall related to this a few years ago. I know because my engine began shutting off on the interstate and other driving situations. You may be able to search for the recall or just take it in to a Honda dealership and tell them that you received a recall notice related to your ignition switch a while back and your car has been stalling out while driving. I believe a replacement of the ignition switch will fix your problem. I haven't had any problems since. The dealership shouldn't charge you anything for the repair.
