Where is the the thermostat on a 2.0 , 2000 vw beetle ? Thank you

First time you might check the thermostat operating.

Heed of antifreeze coolant temperature!!!

The thermostat location for 2000 VW Beetle 2.0L is on back of the alternator at the bottom side of the bracket.

IMPORTANT NOTE: It is NOT necessary to replace the alternator if you want to change the thermostat !!!

Thermostat checking:
1. Cold engine. Start up the engine and watch of the water temp indicator. After first value 60 Celsius Degree you still warm up the engine until the lifter (pointer) reach 80 C deg. (second mark after 60 C deg.). At this time you let engine running at idle speed and check with your hand the thermostat plastic housing and hose temperature in bottom left side of the engine. Heed of alternator driving belt and ventilator fan !!!
2. If the thermostat is good the hose must be cold until the water temp indicator reach almost 90 C deg.
3. The thermostat opening temperature is 87 C deg.
4. If the hose is already warm the thermostat is out of order.

Thermostat location, Part number: 050 121 113 C, in german - "Kuehlregle".

Remark: 87 ... 102 Celsius deg.
Price around $35:

Hi the thermostat in my vw polo 2002 is not working properly and i need to change it but dont know where it is located can u tell me

hi.
the thermostat housing is normally found where the top radiator hose connects to the engine. it is normally held on with 3 bolts and the thermostat is inside. do not forget to use a new gasket as well when replacing the thermostat and to top up the coolant with a water and antifreeze mix rather than just water.

Where exactly is the thermostat on a 88 jetta, i believe it is a 1.6L 16 valve.

VW family engine thermostat is behind the lower coolant inlet . It will be either a plastic or aluminum housing.

To find it...open engine lid and look down at bottom of radiator. You will see a rubber hose from the base of the radiator to the engine at the left side looking in. The hose is attached to the housing that holds in the thermostat.

FYI. Never run a VW engine without a thermostat in place or overheating will occur ....really !

THERMOSTAT REMOVAL

HINT: Removal of the thermostat would have an adverse

effect causing a lowering of cooling efficiency. Do not remove

the thermostat, even if the engine tends to overheat.

1. DRAIN ENGINE COOLANT

2. REMOVE AIR CLEANER CAP WITH AIR CLEANER

HOSE

3. DISCONNECT ECT SW1TCH CONNECTORS

4. DISCONNECT ENGINE VIRE PROTECTOR FROM

WATER INLET AND RH CYLINDER HEAD

Remove the 2 nuts, and disconnect the engine wire

protector from the water inlet and cylinder head.

5. DISCONNECT WATER INLET PIPE FROM WATER

INLET AND LH CYLINDER HEAD

a) Remove the bolt and disconnect the inlet pipe from the

water inlet.

b) Remove the O-ring from the inlet pip e.

6. REMOVE WATER INLET AND THERMOSTAT

a) Remove the 3 nuts, water inlet and thermostat.

b) Remove the gasket from the thermostat.

INSPECTION

INSPECT THERMOSTAT

HINT: The thermostat is numbered with the valve opening

temperature.

a) immerse the thermostat in water and gradually heat the

water.

b) Check the valve opening temperature.

Valve opening temperature: 80 - 84CC (176- 183 deg f)

If the valve opening temperature is not as specified,

replace the thermostat.

c) Check the valve lift.

Valve lift: 10.0 mm (0.394 inch) or more at 95CC (203 deg f)

If the valve lift is not as specified, replace the

thermostatleedavidian_93.jpgleedavidian_92.jpg.

d) Check that the valve is fully closed when the

thermostat is at low temperatures (below 40CC (104CF)).

if not dosed, replace the thermostat.

INSTALLATION

1. PLACE THERMOSTAT IN WATER PUMP

a) Install a new gasket on to the thermostat.

b) Align the thermostat jiggle valve with the upper stud

bolt and insert the thermostat in the water inlet

housing.

HINT: The jiggle valve maybe set within 15 deg of either

side of the prescribed position.

2. INSTALL WATER INLET

Install the water inlet with the 3 nuts.

Torque: 8.0 Nm (80 kgf-cm, 69 inch lbs.)

3. INSTALL WATER INLET PIPE

a) Install a new O-ring to the water inlet pipe.

Hi, I have a 1993 Chevy 1500 1/2 ton (4wd) p/u that locks up while backing up in reverse only and can be released after stepping on the brake. I am wondering if anyone knows what could cause this?

I had a similar problem with a vw scirroco, found to be the rear brake shoes breaking up and jamming when backing up. Check your rear shoes as this may be the problem.
