Timing chain on 2000 Jaguar

Where is the timing chain located? There is no owners manual with it. Is it located in the front behind the fan like in a Chevrolet? Or else where?

The jaguar v8 has 4 timing chains located on the front of the engine behind the aluminum timing cover.
You can inspect them by remove the valve covers but to replace them you need special factory tools to set the vehicle up on TDC.
The secondary timing chain tensioners are a common failure on this vehicle which will cause the chain to break.
You can replace the tensioners to prevent this failure just by removing the valve covers and exhaust sprocket, but if this is not the issue the chains should be lifetime, not like a timing belt which is required to be replaced by time and mileage.

It will be behind a aluminum timing cover on the same side as the belts, this is not something you should service yourself unless you are capable of setting up the cam and crank timing and have some special tools that you may need, you may just have a collapsed timing chain tensioner that should be easy to remove and check it should go through the side of the timing cover and will have a big 20-22 mm threaded body with a copper washer or could be a broken timing chain guide either way the timing cover should be removed and all the guides and chains be inspected please rate -jeff also how many mile on this motor?

Can anyone recommend somewhere reputable I can get this done in the Ft. Lauderdale, Fl area. Car runs and drives fine but there is tapping noises - so I don't start it - lest i break the chain and make it worst. Quote i got want to replace ALL the chains (over $1700 in Jag parts alone) i just want to be sure that this is not overkill for a simple tensioner fix

The engine has a timing chain which is continureously lubricated by oil. When problem occours, as it requires most of everything on front of engine to be removed to replace it!

When should the timing chain be replaced on a 2001 XJ8?

As most timing chains, when they start to get noisy, that is usually when they start to stretch beyond there limits, refer to owners/service manual for any periodic maintenance.

Jaguar xj8 wont start after replacing timing chans

I'm sorry to tell you this, but you are going to have to start from ground zero. Take your timing cover back off. Ensure that your NO. 1 Piston is at TDC (Top Dead Center) and that your cam is aligned properly. Once you've done that, put the timing chain back on and bolt everything back together. If your timing is off a little bit, your engine won't run. If your timing is off alot, then your valves will hit the piston heads and cause ALOT of damage.

Timing chain

No it can not. It is in the front of the engine, underneather the front timing cover, which is between the head and oil pan. Timing chain can only be replaced.
