Replace the pvc system first it is cheaper than rings, also you may want to confirm thier findings by having a compression check done and compare to specs than recheck after adding 4 caps fulls of motor oil (clean) down each cylinder this will tell you if youve got bad rings -jeff

The question i want an answer to was what brand of oil did they use in the buick century custom from the factory.

Hi Keri,if you look in you owners manual,it won't have a brand type,it will have a chart of what grade oil you should use in certain temperatures. Most Buicks have the oil type printed on the oil cap - it will likely be 5W-20, 5W-30, 5W-40, 10W-30 or 10W-40. If it isn't printed on the oil cap, check your owners manual for the exact type before adding new oil. Here's a link you may look at. http://www.amsoil.com/mygarage/vehiclelookup.aspx?url2=2000+BUICK+CENTURY+J

I have a 2000 Subaru Legacy that overheats!

there should be no pressure in a system when the engine is cold
the cap is designed to allow extra pressure to blow off into the over flow reservoir and as the system cols down there is a vacuum created in the cooling system which opens a valve in the radiator cap and draws coolant back from the reservoir
I suggest that yo have a radiator shop test the cap for operation and get a new cap

The car 161,000 miles does not use oil, easy start, serviced regular, over heated, took to garage, replaced water hoses, later oveer heated again, took back, saidthey couldn't find any thing wrong after...

First thing to do is find a new mechanic. Check that the fan comes on when the engine gets to operating temperature. Blow out the radiator core from the engine side to get rid of bugs and other debris. Make sure the radiator cap seal is in good shape. Check the spark plug wiring to see if one might have fallen off of a plug. If the check engine light is on, take the car to Autozone or a similar business that allows free scanning of your engine computer and read out any stored codes. Use these codes to pursue any problems, or at least know if your mechanic is feeding you bs. Hope this helps!

Oil cooler under the intake plenum at rear top of engine is either bad or the gasket is gone. If you take oil filler cap off, you will see the paste on the cap. Are you going through coolant every so often?

Same as on my wife's 01.

it is normal to have that paste stuff on the underside of your oil cap and some on the tube the cap goes on. this is condensation it goes to the highest points in the engine alot of short trips makes this worse
if the oil thats drained out looks like regular dirty old oil then dont worry about it
if it looks pastie white then you got trouble
