    Hello,

There may be a plethora of reasons as to the fly wheel not turning, but here's some questions that you may be able to answer to help me out:

-What is your daughter's description of the car stalling? Was there a bang? Did the car shake? Did it just stop?

-Is there fuel in the vehicle?

-Is it standard or automatic transmission?

-What sound(s) are heard when you try to turn it over?

-Is your battery charged? (You can check this with a multimeter [cheap from radioshack or The Source] it should be around 11-14 Volts)

After you answer these questions, I should be able to help you out. Thanks

2000 olds alero cranks then makes a metal grinding sound and won't start

You need to have your flywheel: replaced.Your starter motor engages against the fly wheel at the back of the motor. Every time your motor stops it tends to be in the same few positions (just the way things work) so there is more stress on some parts of your fly wheel than others. Because of this the teeth wear out on the fly wheel which means the starter can correctly engage on the fly wheel which is the grinding noise.

Daughter called me ..car wont start. checked battery at Autozone...it is good. someone stopped to help them and bang on startere and it starts up. Bad starter. Starter replaced. Next day daughter...

it sounds like you have blown fuse to the Alternator.. I don't know what car you are talking about but they charging systems vary.. But if alternator isn't getting all the power it needs it won't charge. this should be checked.

good luck

Daughter was driving her 93 nissan altima, and it stopped running. tried to jump it and it won't turn over it just clicks. all the lights work.

Put a socket and ratchet on the crankshaft pulley bolt, and attempt to manually turn the engine. It should turn without a great deal of effort. If it is impossible to turn (locked up), the engine is probably seized, or hydro-locked (water, coolant, or oil has entered the combustion chamber, and as you know, liquids can't be compressed).

1996 manual jetta won't start. It won't even crank. There is a whinning noise when I turn the key from the engine but that's it.

Sounds like the starter drive is not fully engaging with the fly wheel... might try to tap firmly on the body of the starter while you turn the key but be careful not to hit the wires... Might get you going enough to get to a garage and have it checked. good luck!

Sierra 1500 wont turn over 350. locked up???

Have the battery tested for a dead cell. It may test at 12 volts but that doesn't mean there isn't a dead cell. Also, if the motor has good compression you probably shouldn't be able to turn it over by hand at the fly wheel. Maybe an old school motor with V belt, but not a newer motor with all those accessories attached to the front.

sounds like your starter ruined your flywheel. replacing the flywheel is not easy. also expensive. call a couple of tranny shops to get an estimate.
