Transfer case doesn't ingage the front drive when shifted into four low or four high (in four low, it does gear down into low granny,but, will not ingage front drive) thanks, myron

    my 96 toyota tacoma has manual locking hubs and this transfer case does not have a accuator on it. what transfers power from transfer case to the front axle ? is it electric, vacuum or manual ?

    is this a true test for my potential problem ? start truck, shift into four wheel drive(sounds as if it clicks into gear good), turn off truck, crawl under truck, rotate front drive shaft that comes out of transfer case by hand(shaft rotates freely), would it be safe to say, its not engaging at the transfer case if it will rotate by hand ?

    I have a 95 toyota tacoma with the same problem as far as the front tires not spinning when i put it in 4 hi or 4 low. the front drive shaft spins though, and you can feel that it does go into 4 low when you put it in. also obviously no 4 wheel drive light comes on!

    Hubs on 1996 toyota tacoma electric working but fails to ingage sometimes, you think that it electric and then trying again it will engage, you can hear a little click when I disengage the shifter out of 4x4. the light will show on dash on when it engages. it is real cold at night now 15 degrees F. sum it up intermitting 4x4

    Transfer is in low range when cold. Once it is warmed up the transfer case shifts into high. I never take it out of 2H. The truck has to be warmed up before driving down the street.

If you have auto locking hubs then you need to see if you are getting good vacuum to the front axel and check for a blown fuse or bad accuater

    you have manuel hubs then you should check to see if the front drive shaft rotates.If it does not the splines on the drive shaft or the transfer case out put shaft may be striped.Most likely the drive shaft.If the drive shaft does rotate then there is a problem with the front yolk on the differentale.It is not uncommon for the splines on the front yolk to be striped where it joins to the transfer case or at any place the shaft connects to it's self.Hope this helps.

    When put in 4low and the trans gears down as it should then the problem would be the out put shaft to drive shaft.You will need to remove the drive shaft and check the splines in it and also on the out put shaft.With the drive shaft remove and transfer case still engaged try to turn the out put shaft by hand.I had a toyota that was older but basic same set up and it striped the splines on the drive shaft.

The NVG 263 transfer case features a three button shift control switch located on the instrument panel. When the vehicle has the ignition key in the RUN position, the transfer case shift control module starts monitoring the transfer case shift control switch to determine if the driver desires a new mode/gear position. At a single press of the transfer case shift control switch, the lamp of the new desired position will begin flashing to inform the driver that the transfer case shift control module has received the request for a new mode/gear position. The lamp will continue to flash until all shifting criteria has been met and the new mode/gear position has been reached (or has been engaged). Once the new mode/gear position is fully active, the switch indicator lamp for the new position will remain ON constantly.
The NVG 263 transfer case provides the driver with 3 manual mode/gear positions:
• 2HI - 2 Wheel Drive high range

If there are problems with electronic part of the systems the shift control switch light will flash warning of a problem , If no lights you have a mechanical problem in the transfer case itself .
The front axle control circuit consists of an electric motor actuator which engages and disengages the front axle. The front axle actuator motor consists of a Permanent Magnetic (PM) motor, a worm gear controlled plunger, a front axle switch and an electronic control circuit all within the actuator assembly.
The front axle actuator has four circuits connected to it, a front axle feed circuit, front axle ground circuit, front axle control circuit and a front axle switch circuit.
Whenever a shift to AUTO 4WD, 4HI, or 4LO is requested, the transfer case shift control module engages the front axle by grounding the front axle control circuit through a current limiting driver. Test Description
The numbers below refer to the step numbers on the diagnostic table.
Tests the electrical function of the front axle actuator. Helps determine between mechanical and electrical malfunctions.
Tests for proper power and ground at the front axle actuator.
Tests the operation of the front axle control circuit.
Helps determine if the transfer case shift control module is able to monitor the front axle switch.
Tests the front axle switch circuit for an open or high resistance.
Measures the voltage between the front axle feed circuit and ground.

Transfer Case - NVG 233-NP1 (Two Speed Selectable)
The NV236 transfer case is an automatic transfer case with three drive ranges. Shifting from rear wheel drive to four wheel drive is done automatically when the transfer case shift control module receives wheel rotating slip information from the speed sensors. The transfer case shift control module then engages the transfer case motor/encoder to position the transfer case from rear to four wheel drive. When the transfer case shift control module receives information that the wheel rotation is the same on both axles, the transfer case shift control module sends position information to the motor/encoder to put the transfer case back into rear wheel drive. The three drive ranges are 2HI, 4HI, and 4LO. The 2HI position is for normal driving with the rear wheels pushing the vehicle. The 4HI, position is for driving through sand, snow, mud, gravel, or heavy rain at normal or slightly below normal speeds. The 4HI engages the front axle to allow for four wheel drive. The front axle is pulling the vehicle, and the rear axle is pushing the vehicle. The 4LO range is used for off road driving, heavy snow, deep mud, or shallow fording. The 4LO is similar to the 4HI except that the gearing in the transfer case is set for low speed and high torque. The NV236 is manufactured at Syracuse New York by New Venture Gear a division of New Process Gear for General Motors.

How do I repair the four wheel drive on a 1999 Ford Ranger XLT?


It depends on what is wrong , is the 4x4 light flashing ? Are you aware of the complexity of the 4x4 system ? Has a electronic control module , has the ability to set an store DTC'S - diagnostic trouble codes !
Transfer Case The four wheel drive system is an electronic shift 4X4 system that allows the operator to choose between three different modes. The operator can switch 4X4 HIGH modes at any speed. To engage or disengage 4X4 LOW the vehicle speed must be less than 5 kph (3 mph), the brake depressed, and the transmission must be in NEUTRAL.
The shift motor sense plate, an integral part of the electronic shift motor, informs the generic electronic module (GEM) of the transfer case shift motor and contact plates A, B, C and D position.
The digital transmission range (TR) sensor is located on the LH side of the transmission, and informs the GEM when the transmission is in the NEUTRAL position.
The electronic shift motor is mounted externally at the rear of the transfer case. It drives a rotary cam which moves the mode fork and range fork within the transfer case between the 4X4 HIGH, 4X4 LOW and 2WD range positions.
When the GEM verifies the completion of the transfer case shift from 2WD to 4X4 HIGH (reading the contact plate positions), the GEM will then energize both pulse vacuum hublock (PVH) solenoids (supplying ground for 45 seconds). The PVH solenoid will allow a HIGH flow of intake manifold vacuum to the "wheel end hublocks", engaging the wheel end hubs to the front differential and transfer case to achieve four wheel drive.

I have a 1995 Silverado 4x4. The 4WD will not engage. Someone told me it may be the actuator for the transfer case. When I try to shift into 4hi, nothing happens. When I try to shift into 4lo, it grinds...


I HAD A BLAZER WITH THE SAME SYMPTOMS REPLACED THE TRANSFER CASE MOTOR AND SOLVED PROBLEM. TRANSFER CASE MOTOR SHIFTS FROM HIGH TO LOW GEAR IN THE TRANSFER CASE AND TELLS THE FRONT ACTUATORS TO INGAGE FRONT HUBS . MOTOR WON'T MOVE TO 4 HIGH AND GRINDS WHEN TRYING TO MOVE TO 4 LOW, TRANSFER CASE MOTOR FAILING . CHECK VACUUM LINES AND ACTUATORS ON FRONT DIFF THEY FAIL, CAN CHANGE TO CABLE ENGAGEMENT INSTEAD OF FAILURE PRONE VACUUM ACTUATORS.

I have a 2000 4wd tacoma with manual locking hubs and the 4wd does not seem to be engaging after locking the hubs and shifting the lever into 4 hi or 4 low


Sounds like one of your hubs is sticking and not engaging. You can check them by engaging the hubs and the transfer case and jacking up each front wheel independently if it doesn't spin your good, if it does you found your problem. As far as fixing a hub goes, it may be just dry and need some grease, or there are some very good aftermarket hubs available from Warn.

Won,t shift transfer case into 4wheel drive


Is the truck on the fly 4X4 push button or is there a lever on the floor you pull into 4 wheel drive? Located on the back of the transfer case not hard to change few bolts and a wire harness. Does the front drive shaft turn when you put it in 4x4 and the front wheels won't ingage? If so then its not your transfer case its the actulator on the front axle at the gear hub or pumpkin it will have two 10mm bolts and a black plastic cover if so remove cover and spray actulator shaft with wd-40.

How to shift into 4wd


Ford has 2 types of 4x4 system engagement. One is a knob on the dash that you just turn to 4wheel drive high or low. The other system is the 4x4 transfer case shift on the transmission tunnel (hump) between the driver and passenger seats. To shift into 4 wheel drive high while driving, just let off the gas and shift transfer case into 4H position, and continue driving. To shift into 4 wheel drive Low, stop the vehicle completely, put transmission in neutral, shift transfer case into 4Low position, put trans. in gear, and start driving. I am assuming before doing the above, you have locked in ( turned the front hubs to 4 wheel drive position.) Any further questions, let me know.

more than like have a broken axle shaft, un hook the rear drive shaft and put it in 4wd if it wont move then you know you got a broken axle shaft or spider gears broke in the pumpkin

check the rear differential as well as the transfer case...you may have broken something in both of them...i have seen it happen...since 4low uses a different gear it is possible for it to move in low and not 4 high
