Question about Hyundai Elantra

1 Answer

I have a 2004 Hyundai Elantra that has been having problems with several electrical components that I can't figure out. The console lights for the shifter position go out but if you tap the console they come back on, sometimes. Now the A/C is acting in the same manner. It cools at times and then it just stops cooling. The fan works all the time but it would be blowing warm air. Hyundai says that they can't find any problems when I go in and actually say the bulbs are blown out. They have no answer when I tell them that they work after a tap or a bump. Any help out there ??

Well as far as the light goes you have a bad connection, most likely one of the connectors near the bulb or the bulb socket itself.
As far as the AC goes I am sure the problem is the AC compressor cycling switch, this is located in the low pressure AC line, this line gets cold when the AC is on, replace the switch, they are known for sticking and causing a loss of AC cooling.

WHEN IM DRIVING, IT POPS OR JERKS ALL OF A SUDDEN AND THEN WONT SHIFT GEARS. WHEN IM ON THE EXPRESSWAY AND IT DOES THIS, IT WILL BARELY GO 55 MPH.

Your transmission fluid is dangerously low (tranny is dry). The pops & jerks are the transmission
internal components trying not to seize onto each other due to lack of lubrication and/or overheating.
Low transmission fluid leads not only to loss of lubrication but lots of overheating (of the tranny).
The loss of Elantra performance (speed tops out at 55), is caused by power loss due to friction inside the transmission. All your power is lost overheating the transmission (toward destruction), instead of
being transmitted through the transmission to the wheels.

The 2004 Elantra takes Hyundai SP-III Automatic Transmission Fluid, with 8.4 quarts used in a
total refill - but just 5 quarts at a fluid change. For How-to transmission fluid change instructions:

How to replace 2004 Hyundai Elantra starter

First, disconnect the battery. Then the only part that needs to be removed to access the starter is the rubber air plenum boot between the throttle body and the air filter housing. This allows enough room to get an arm in there to access the 14mm bolts that attach the starter to the transmission. After removing the bolts, the starter can be removed from underneath the car. lower it down as much as possible, and unbolt the power cable. You may have to twist and turn it a bit to get around the support between the engine block and intake manifold, but it will come out.

NO. These models do not have warnings on the transmission failure. There is warnings only when the transmission encounters electrical component failure, overheating(some cars), low fluid. Usually the warning is the O/D flashing light, or a seperate transmission light. Hopefully this helps

Failure of instrument cluster & console lighting

My 2003 Elantra had a problem when I would use the turn signals. The dash lights would flicker on and off and if you jiggled the arm of the dimmer switch it would turn the dash lights back on. Over time it got worse. AND little did I know it also made the tail lights and front parking lights flicker on and off!!! So it was not good to say the least.
I took the switch out and opened it up. And inside where the turn signal components moved to make their contact connections, there was a build up of electrical contact grease at the bottom making intermittent contact between two points (I'm assuming gravity and vibration over the years moved the grease down there and built up). I cleaned the excess contact grease from the area. Reassembled the switch. Put back in steering column. No longer having issues.
